Outbound looks like a game I need right now, a chilled cosy open-world exploration game about living off-grid and building up your dream minivan.

Seems it's been a popular one too, with it being announced that its hit over 1 million Steam wishlists. And, according to SteamDB that makes it currently about the 23rd most wishlisted upcoming game on Steam. Nice reminder, since I had missed this one when it was initially announced and now I can't wait to go through it.

More about it: "Outbound is an open-world exploration game set in a utopian near future. Start with an empty camper van and turn it into the home of your dreams - alone or together with your friends. Build and explore at your own pace. Scavenge materials, craft, and build in and on top of your vehicle with modular parts. Advance in technology and efficiently use energy to power your home. Adjust your playstyle to adapt to new landscapes and changing environmental conditions."

Their latest trailer is below, which is for the Alpha testing so keep in mind it's not finished:

From the press release: “Hitting one million wishlists is a dream come true,” said Marc Volger, co-founder of Square Glade Games. “Our community has been incredible from day one, and now, with our backers helping us test the game hands-on, we’re one big step closer to creating the cozy road-trip experience everyone’s been waiting for.”

Releasing next year it will be playable solo or in online co-op for up to 4 players.

Game Highlights:

  • Build Your Dream Van – Expand, decorate, and personalise your camper to suit your vibe.
  • Harvest Nature’s Power – Harness solar, wind, and water energy to fuel your off-grid lifestyle.
  • Live Sustainably – Grow your own food, forage, and cook wholesome meals under open skies.
  • Explore Together – Set out solo or road-trip with up to four friends in seamless co-op.
  • Craft and Innovate – Research, refine, and create the tools to thrive wherever the road takes you.

This might be the closest I'll ever be to owning a camper van... But the base building and crafting mechanism doesn't really appeal :(

So basically a survival game without the prospect of imminent death. Sounds fun.
