Nightdive Studios / Atari have announced that the classic System Shock 2 (1999) is getting delisted from stores on October 10th. This means you won't be able to buy it, but existing purchases will remain so you can still download and play it.

It's not all bad news though, as the announcement on Steam noted it's going to be bundled with the newer System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster. Although, the remaster is a fair bit pricier at £23.99 compared with £6.99 for the original.

One interesting point about this is that it's part of the GOG Preservation Program, and so far GOG don't seem to have announced a change for their store but it's likely it will happen at some point. GOG did announce late last year when Warcraft I and II were removed that they've extended their compatibility promise to keep delisted games updated as well. In this case though it shouldn't matter too much especially if GOG gets them bundled together, it's at least not being completely removed like we've seen with other games in the past.

This is terrible news. SS2 is one of my all time favs. Knowing Nightdive, the quality of the remaster will be complete garbage, full of bugs, completely broken, or some combination of all three of those things. So then if you want a non-trash version of the game, it'll just cost a TON more. Wonderful.

That's just a few days' notice. The game has been available for very cheap before (1,50€ in the past year on Steam, according to ITAD and SteamDB; some bundles though not too recently). The current best offer (excluding vouchers) is on WinGameStore.

@R Daneel Olivaw -- "System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster" was released "26 Jun, 2025"

It has:
Full Controller Support
1. Xbox Controllers
2. PlayStation Controllers

Single-player
Online Co-op
LAN Co-op
Family Sharing

The LAN Co-op is a absolute blast (admittedly there was a nasty DC bug that AFAIK is now fixed).
The controller support plays great on Steam Deck and Linux PC on XBONE* Controller.

The price appears to be 12.99 -- I think I paid double that at launch and it was still worth it to me.

I get that if money is tight some people would prefer the old version on sale for 90% off, but in my opinion the new version is wayyyyyy better.

They had to rewrite a ton of the source code which was lost to time AFAIK.

The only thing they could do to make me happier is release the source code someday or submit it to the GOG Game Preservation program. I play at 5k resolution and everything looks great, game runs on Vulkan and there are much more settings like HUD, default Audio is correct for me, keybindings, intuitive Steam Deck menu improvements (for mouse & keeb designed game).

Honestly, if you liked the original I can't see why you wouldn't love the higher res textures & all the amazing improvements.

Nightdive usually do good job with remasters. And if original is bundled it with their remaster anyway, what's the problem?

I have the original on GOG anyway.

One of a few rare Steam game news that, two days after publishing, still has exactly zero likes while having hundreds (300+) of comments. :).
