Basingstoke (now known as Welcome to Basingstoke) is an absolute underappreciated gem from Puppygames, and now is the perfect time to jump back in. It somewhat recently had a console release, and so the developers have refreshed the PC version with a whole bunch of upgrades so perhaps it's time to give this classic a new life.

What is it? If you've not heard of it before - it's a tense roguelike from 2018 that mixes stealth and arcade action. You get to explore the smouldering ruins of apocalyptic Basingstoke, UK, a world of extreme peril where reanimated undead and ferocious alien monsters roam. It really is an incredibly tense game, and one that Puppygames previously said financially ruined them.

The new update announced adds in a big remake of the later stages of the game, along with a special new end level that actually allows you to escape with 10 completely new areas and nearly 300 new scenery items. All that plus what's in the list below (and many bug fixes) add up to an awesome sounding upgrade:

  • Added Achievements for the new levels, Horde mode... and a new extra special secret one :)
  • Added three new special Omnicorp items
  • Replaced the old Horde mode UI and added special skins for the Horde mode characters
  • Enemies would block the player hurdling if on the other side of a barrier - now the player knocks them back instead, and ninja kicks them if timed right
  • Added UI scaling option
  • Added controller shake support, and sliders for controller and camera shake
  • Added audio recording to instant replay, and options for resolution, framerate etc. (Windows only)
  • Added quick zoom control that works in the game and the map
  • Added controls to the map to find the level start, player and exit
  • Changed the map so undiscovered areas are shown as flat black rather than hidden
  • Added various tweaks to enemy spawning and behaviour based on difficulty autotuning
  • Added FRAGILE warning to melee weapons if near breaking
  • Added option to view item info in the shop and vending machines
  • Changed popup help controls – show map, show next help, or close help, depending on context
  • Added enemy models to enemy info in the encyclopedia

The most recent trailer to show it off (for the console release) is below:

Back in 2019, Puppy Games made this free to Linux users [External Link] on itch.io.

However, I notice that this no longer seems to be the case as when I went to re-install the game, they now want some money!
