Back in October 2025, Amazon announced that their MMO game New World would no longer see updates - and now they've confirmed the full shutdown.

In their original announcement, they said they were not sunsetting the game "at this time" but that wording of course left it quite open. At the time the purchase option on Steam vanished too, but it seems some still saw it. Now they've gone a step further and officially confirmed that the game will be fully shut down on January 31, 2027 and it will be delisted from stores today.

Cheekily, they will still allow people to purchase in-game currency until July 20th, and no refunds for anyone who does.

A real shame, even if you weren't a player it's just sad to see games completely vanish like this. Game preservation means nothing to some companies. It's a reminder that putting hours and hours into MMOs like it can just be ripped away from you with no chance to host a game yourself.

New World: Aeternum | Release Date: 28th September 2021
Platform: Proton / Wine

I wonder what's the progress on private servers.

This is so stupid. They should release server files. Yes, I am aware the infrastructure is probably more complex than that. But this is precisely what the "stop killing games" initiative is about.

I doubt enough people care enough to make the project worth it and it would just get cease and desisted into oblivion anyway.

I hope the Lord of the Rings MMO is dead. I didn't want them to make that from the start.

that's why i try to avoid every game-as-service, because committing to it is a waste of time once all of it is gone with a click of publisher's killswitch.

Some chat reported in my Google feed that Facepunch (who make Rust) have offered Amazon $25M to buy the game and turn it into a community effort. Well see. The screenshot of their offer looked like banter to me, not a serious offer, although Facepunch CEO Alistair McFarlane went on to say that he values game preservation, so maybe its real.
