Heroic Games Launcher v2.19 released adding ZOOM Platform, AppImage updates and more

Update 14:52 UTC: version 2.19.1 was also released, as a bug-fix for the Linux version due to issues launching games.


Heroic Games Launcher remains as one of the best ways to play games from GOG, Epic and Amazon on SteamOS / Linux and Steam Deck with a new version out now.

The developers just launched version 2.19.0 which brings with it many enhancements to the app, including an expansion of supported stores. With this release ZOOM Platform is now supported in the Linux version. In the release post on GitHub the developers mentioned how they've received more contributions than ever before but they are also dealing with "AI slop here and there" now too.

Main highlights for the release include:

  • Added experimental integration for games from the Zoom platform, Linux only for now. Next release we will bring it to the others.
  • macOS - Added support for DXMT -M chips only- (Install a version of Wine-Staging and 2 variants will appear, it only applies to new Wine-Staging installations, so if you want the DXMT variant of a version you already have installed, reinstall it)
  • Added new Launch Options setting for games that supports it.
  • Added Import button to the game page so its easier to find it.
  • Added some Sync-Saves options to the Game page as well.
  • macOS - Removed the ability to install Steam with a button since it is not working anymore, we are investigating other ways of automate that, but for now we preferred to remove it.
  • Cleaned up several options that are not relevant for Linux and macOS anymore.
  • Improved gamepad navigation in general
  • Linux - Added initial support for AppImage auto-update.
  • Windows - both the Setup and Portable versions are signed with certificate now.
  • Updated Electron to v39
  • Updated gogdl and legendary with fixes for a few bugs related with game listing, updates and more.
  • Linux - The DXVK Frame Rate option was removed since it was removed from DXVK completely and it was not doing anything already (it's still available on macOS)
  • Added Irish translations
  • Accessibility - Added an option to disable all animations
  • Several other fixes and improvements.

I like the look of Heroic, it's a lot better designed visually than Lutris and feels more user friendly, but since Lutris can run all the stores Heroic can, and at least for GoG has access to lots of useful scripts for things like mods or just actual playability, I don't see a use case for Heroic for myself. I'm curious where other people fall on this though. Have I missed something about Heroic?

Unless this was changed, Lutris installs EGS meaning you have to deal with that garbage game store. Heroic basically bypasses any store it integrates and just asks you to login to the services to serve the games you have purchased.

My use case for Lutris over Heroic is for those game setup files I find laying on the ground after they fell off a truck full of game setup files. The customizability shines better there, even if both programs are capable of the same end results eventually.

I hadn't considered that actually. That's definitely a point to Heroic. I guess it goes to show how seldom I actually play anything on EGS.

I used to have both installed, but worried I'd end up with multiple installs of games (out of lazyness and lack of attentin on my own part) and just didn't want to bother deciding on a case by base basis which one to use, but maybe I should give Heroic another shot just for EGS-integration.

Same. I don't get logic, why stubbornly not to include Steam games import to Heroic.

I was exactly the same, and it turns out that not having to deal with a shitty launcher does lead to wanting to play those free games. Give it a shot, you might end up like me, actually choosing to play those freebies because of the much much better UX.

They recommend the flatpak but by default the locations in the flatpak are different from the shipped binary. I didn't look at the details yet but the flatpak isn't a drop-in replacement for me.

This is so curios. For me one of the most annoying thing about Heroic is… it's UI. It uses custom "webby" stuff instead of using native OS controlls like Lutris and it makes it's Look&Feel utterly annoying… Also Lutris just works better overall

Now Heroic has a nifty feature of asking you what exe to actually use. That way i can easily start the expansions in MOHAA for example.

The 2.19 version was buggy with non working Epic games, but they very quickly pushed out an update 2.19.1 to fix the issue.

I like more of the simplistic Heroic compared to Lutris which is riddled with funky installers that sometimes work and sometimes not. For example GOG version of Cyberpunk was a pain to install in Lutris where with Heroic it was just clicks to install.

I have started testing out Heroic recently. I find that it is not as feature-rich as Lutris but somewhat more stable. What features they do have, work and are well implemented. For example, custom categories. In Lutris, you can assign them but they are pointless. In Heroic, you can filter by them.

The only thing I like about Lutris, that I haven't figured out how to do in Heroic so far, is that I can create an "empty" wine prefix and I can do it without having to be online. I haven't tried this to create an UMU-based empty prefix in either launcher, however. Not sure it would work. UMU only seems to create the prefix once you run the installer.

I also like the idea behind Steam integration in Lutris, even if I don't use it. The idea of being able to track total gameplay time while offline is appealing. Having two launchers (Steam & Lutris) running in the background to do so, is not so appealing. If only Valve would enable tracking game time in offline mode ...

Heroic prides itself to replace official launchers and code their own app from the ground up.
Their backend tools speak directly to the servers of Amazon, Epic and GoG.
This is quite an unnecessary task and a hard one to do for Steam, as it is both complex and natively available on all platforms.
It serves as a counterpart for non-steam games.
