Love classic Sonic games and other similar platformers? The Surge Engine and the included Surge the Rabbit game are great open source projects. They give you a fully free and open source platform to play retro-styled Sonic-like games, along with learning how to build you own - it's worth taking a look.

A new release of the Open Surge Engine was released recently with version 0.6.1.3 now available with some big improvements to it. The main changes included:

  • Auto-detect gamepad layouts for consistent cross-platform behavior
  • Introduced a more sophisticated architecture for the Audio System
  • Prevent the underwater muffler from altering the drowning music
  • Changed the formula of the underwater muffler
  • Pause or resume all audio when pausing or resuming the game
  • Improved the Pipe System and made it re-entrant
  • Improved the Title Card script
  • Prevent collected Life Powerups from respawning when restarting the level
  • Surge the Rabbit: introduced Game State and Consumable Entities
  • New translations: Ukrainian, Lithuanian
  • Options Screen: added compatibility with specific versions of the engine
  • Level Editor: redesigned the Grid System
  • Windows: made the window display the icon of the executable
  • Android: added support for 16 KB page sizes on 64-bit devices
  • Unix: introduced a compile-time opt-in for OpenGL ES
  • Updated the CMake script
  • Many assorted improvements and fixes
