Square Enix just announced that the original FINAL FANTASY VII is being refreshed, with existing owners granted a free copy of the new one.

In a Steam announcement they said the current version will be renamed FINAL FANTASY VII – 2013 Edition, whenever the new one launches (which they didn't say). The current FINAL FANTASY VII edition will be retired and no longer available for purchase too. So if you pick it up now before it happens - you get to keep access to both.

The full announcement as posted on Steam:

To our FINAL FANTASY VII community,

We will be releasing a new version of FINAL FANTASY VII on Steam.

Following the launch of this new version, the current version will be renamed FINAL FANTASY VII – 2013 Edition.

Please review the below information to understand how this update will affect existing owners:

Availability of Versions

  • When the new version launches, FINAL FANTASY VII – 2013 Edition will no longer be available for purchase on the Steam Store.
  • Existing owners will continue to have access to FINAL FANTASY VII – 2013 Edition in their library.
  • The new version will be listed on the Steam Store as FINAL FANTASY VII.

Access for Existing Owners

  • All players who already own the 2013 Edition are eligible to access the new version at no additional cost.
  • Both versions will remain accessible in the owner’s Steam Library once the new version is released.

Save Data Information

  • Save data will not be compatible between the two versions.
  • 2013 Edition saves will only work with the 2013 Edition.
  • New version saves will only work with the new version.

Multiple FINAL FANTASY titles also just launched today on GOG, so perhaps we'll see this new edition up on there too.

FINAL FANTASY VII currently has a 60% discount on Steam until February 4th.

The community will love it when their saves don't work with the new version!

Why can't they have a decent numbering scheme?

There is one Final Fantasy VIII but about 10 Final Fantasy VII for fucks sake!

... and the current version being delisted, as usual. A bit of burying the lede there.

so, about the new version... what exactly is gonna be new about it, other than being new and incompatible with the old one?

Interesting news! I'm looking forward to seeing what the new build of the game has over the current. If I remember correctly the switch port includes some features the current PC port lacks like analog movement, and turbo speed. Hopefully we get those sorts of features in the new release. I'm also wondering about the save file differences. I hope someone takes a look into the possibility of editing an old save to work in the new game.

I'm curious what they're gonna do with this. The obvious would be a simple update to keep it running fine on modern systems, but I doubt this would lead to incompatible saves…

Square is one of these company that do some stuff good, some stuff bad. I really hope this one is the former.

And, although very unlikely, if this was a remaster, I'd be se happy.

Fine. I bought it while I still could. 60k IDR (less than 4 USD) is a good deal to get both new and old version (which I want for collection-ist reasons).

Means I have to give props to Squeenix. This is the way to do it, and companies like Rockstar should take notes (remember the GTA 3D trilogy remaster fiasco?).

Probably just a port of the Switch version. Expect very blurry backgrounds with extremely sharp 3D assets. Hopefully, no new models similar to FF8R, because that'd be more work.

Fun fact: the Switch version is - ultimately - a port of the notorious 1997 PC version, so expect no analog movement and 15fps menu framerate unless this isn't just a sloppy port of an existing sloppy port (of a sloppy 2013 PC port?) of a botched ancient Eidos port. Yum.

Gosh, did the Switch also get the MIDI soundtrack instead of the high-quality samples from PS1?

I think they got rid of MIDI for the 2013 port already, so we're good there.
