Blizzard have released Diablo II: Resurrected – Infernal Edition on Steam, a newly upgraded version of the classic action RPG and it's Steam Deck Verified too.

Oh what joy, I had to grab this as soon as possible as I have such fond memories of playing through it when I was a lot younger. Diablo 2 really is an absolute classic, and holds up really well today. With a few enhancements to it in this new addition like the new Warlock class, an expanded end-game, new items, and various quality of life updates like a loot filter perhaps now it's better than ever?

One thing that should be noted a lot clearer, which is buried in the small-print at the very bottom of the Steam page, is this rather important little notice:

Internet connection, Battle.net® Account, and Battle.net® desktop app required to play.

I can hear your groaning from here - but actually, this doesn't seem to be quite correct. The game directly launches with no third-party launcher ever touched. It does note it's signing into Battle.net when you launch to the menu, but other than that it works just fine with the latest Proton 10 on Linux.

Even controller support worked perfectly without issues with my PowerA OPS v1, and for someone like me who nowadays prefers the controller but hasn't played Diablo 2 since probably the early 2000s this is just incredible. A real nostalgia trip.

The super easy access via Steam with all the new bits, and it working great on Linux with Proton made it easily worth the purchase for me.

You can see the main changes in the Blizzard news post.

As someone mentioned in their user review, the game appears to have:

- Mandatory Battle net account linking
- Always-online / online DRM

You'd probably need to emulate the Switch versions of D2R and D3 to play these offline at all.

Anyway, the price is a joke. No sprites, either - which, to me, is a subtle indicator of how much Blizzard really cares. I.e.: not a whole lot, gib money pls.

Funny thing, I have Diablo 2 sitting on my shelf and just this week I reopened it for the first time in years and I was intrigued by the fact that the 3 CDs are all stacked on top of each other. I should probably rip them and store the ISOs on my backup external HDDs, but it's Diablo 2 so I don't really care.

Note that you do have to login at least once every 30 days, so there's an online requirement even for offline play. I do feel like this should be part of the steam deck verified statement on the store page.

This is awesome, and they added a new class. Last time I played it was back when it came out.

Ah.

I really want that to be good, but between the footnote, the reviews, and the "blizzard-ness" of things, I'm really wary of it. I have no problem with the price, but given everything else, it feels like a trap.

$40 ... !!! 😂

The expansion is 25$ on Battle.net. I'm going to wait until they either give us a way to get the Steam version for cheap if we own the Battle.net version (unlikely to ever happen unfortunately...) or until there's a sale where its cheaper to buy it off Steam than buy the expansion on Battle.net (which probably means years of waiting). I'm glad its finally on Steam, but I don't want to pay for the game twice.

Edit: actually, that would be the third time, I bought the original on release day in the 90s.

$40 is kinda steep for a 20+ year old game, even if it has "improved" visuals.
