Much like 11 bit studios are doing with the original Frostpunk, they're going back to their roots with a complete reimagining of This War of Mine.

If you've not played it, This War of Mine is a pretty brutal look at life of a group of civilians trying to survive in a besieged city. You have to manage their needs like food and medicine, along with constant danger lurking around every corner and through every window.

The first details were shared in a company financial press release where they confirmed multiple projects were on the go. While we already knew of the Unreal Engine 5 remake of Frostpunk that will be called Frostpunk 1886, as that was revealed a year ago, this is the first I've heard of This War of Mine getting the same treatment.

From the press release:

As part of the updated strategy, the Company officially confirmed work on two completely new, proprietary IPs (working projects P12 and P14) and a new game set in the Frostpunk universe (P13). An equally important element of the roadmap is the return to the studio’s most important brands in a new, refreshed formula. Alongside the already-in-development Frostpunk 1886 project, the Company announced project P15, which is a reimagining of the cult classic This War of Mine.

“Our goal is to build a diversified portfolio. On the one hand, we are investing in completely new worlds, opening subsequent chapters in the studio’s history through proprietary projects P14 and P12. We are also expanding the universe of the cult classic Frostpunk into a new genre through the realization of P13. We also know what immense value our existing brands hold. Projects like Frostpunk 1886 or the newly announced P15, which is a reimagining of This War of Mine, are not standard remasters. They represent a fully modern, fresh take on the games that defined 11 bit studios, designed from the ground up with a multi-year lifecycle and long-term community engagement in mind,” announces Przemysław Marszał, CEO of 11 bit studios S.A.

In the post they mentioned that Frostpunk 1886 is going through "Advanced production work" and should be out sometime in 2027 / 2028.

They also held an earnings call, with a transcript available, that gives just a smidgen more detail. From Przemek Marcinowski, CEO/President of 11 bit studios, noting it will be using Unreal as well and that it will have "New content, tons of improvement, visuals, gameplay, et cetera. It will be This War of Mine, the game people loved" but the point is to bring it up to current standards to be "ready for new people, for new players, and also with one special exciting feature". Something for players of the original to have a new experience they say, but they won't give more than that. It's still in the concept phase with development to begin sometime in the middle of this year so it's quite some ways off yet.

Doesn't really need to be brought up to "current standards" whatever that means, but there are a few QoL things that could be fixed up with a remake, especially with the excursions or whatever they're called. I've had buildings softlock more times than I care for.

That's what I was thinking. They could do a completely new take on the game, like a fully 3d game instead of a 2.5D one, but I wouldn't class that as a remake.

It will still be native Linux?

No one can say, as the article mentions it’s in the concept phase.

one special exciting feature
Multiplayer?
The board game can be played solo (like the original videogame) or with a group, so I wonder if they'll implement something of a turn-based process for a multiplayer mode?

Wouldn't that be exactly remake? That wouldn't be remaster, which they said it won't be.

only as much as Two Point Hospital is a remake of Theme Hospital (or even less so, depending on what they call "reimagine")

Be cool if they updated and also made it like some future horror war instead. To give people something truly new rather then just a reskin with better UI....
