Emulating the Sony PlayStation 3 just got even better, with the open source RPCS3 now configuring games for you.
How does it do this? As their community team announced on X/Twitter, they're using information available from their RPCS3 Wiki. It's plug and play, no extra configuration is needed. It seems to be optional too, as noted in the original pull request on GitHub you don't have to use it but the point is just to make running games easier and reduce the support gamers need when fixes for various games are already available.
If you have custom settings already, it won't overwrite them.
In other recent news for the RPCS3 project - they also managed to nicely improve performance. As the team again posted on X/Twitter to note:
We have achieved a new breakthrough on emulating PS3's Cell CPU!
Elad discovered new SPU usage patterns and coded ways to generate more optimised PC code from them - [benefiting] all games!
Twisted Metal, one of the most SPU-intensive games, sees a 5-7% Average FPS improvement.
There's even more too, RPCS3 can also now load encrypted ISO games.
Simply incredible to see all this progress. Open source emulation really is the key to game preservation when it comes to older consoles.
