An update on the Linux version of Underworld Ascendant

By - | Views: 9,869

After a reader contacted us concerned that Underworld Ascendant [Official Site] wasn't listing Linux support on their Steam page, I got in touch with OtherSide Entertainment to get some up to date clarification on what's happening.

The last time we spoke was in June so with the news that the release was coming later than originally planned, it was a good idea to get some up to date information.

Here's what they told me after a short chat today:

We still do not have an exact date for the Linux release for Underworld Ascendant on Steam, but the Mac and Linux versions will be made available sometime after the PC release to make sure they have enough QA attention. Once we have a more concrete schedule, we'll be happy to share it with you!

Backers and the public will receive a Linux version, but most likely will not be available on November 15th with the PC release.

Thankfully, because we have some dedicated external playtesters who have also been helping us on the side with the Linux and Mac issues, we're still tracking and fixing major issues along the way while we work on the PC version. The time after November 15th will just give us more time to dedicate to making sure the Mac and Linux versions are ready, and we didn't miss anything.

While it's always seriously disappointing to be left waiting (hello Battletech), the fact that they are fixing issues with the Linux version as they go and getting it tested is still a good sign.

It should also launch on GOG as well, although that doesn't seem to have a date yet.

Hey, just noticed that a Native Linux backer build was installing on Steam, (I tested it on Wine a couple months back, and it was super flakey). The native build's executable has the timestamp from 27th Aug (when this article went up). Didn't notice any statements regarding the backer build availability on Linux.

I'm running it now and with my RX 570 on the 'Ultra' setting @1440p and I'm getting above 100 fps averaging around 130 fps. Haven't noticed any major issues so far, input seems responsive, no notable stutters or frame dips. It's reassuring and pleasantly surprising that the native build is in such a decent state.

Figured I'd give you a heads up! :)

Edit: Played through first demo stage, and a portion of the second, annnnnd apparently the settings weren't sticking properly, after restarting it looks like previously it wasn't even applying the correct resolution, or possibly graphic quality setting (singular, unity launcher style list of presets).
Second zone has a lot more visual detail and rigged characters. Seeing the framerate fluctuate from 27-100 averaging about 40ish @1440 (much more in line with what i'd expect from my mid range card), should run much more reasonably at 1080p. There are a few minor issues, a lot of Z-fighting and health bar/mana bars aren't working.

Will submit feedback to OtherSide after i put another hour or so into it (has a button on the main menu to submit feedback) and I'll also use the "Submit Bug" prompt in the pause menu if i come across anything major. Help them along with their Linux QA if i can (:
