Dota Underlords from Valve is out with the City Crawl campaign mode

By - | Views: 17,809

Valve's latest game, Dota Underlords, has today left Early Access and with it comes a huge patch full of new content and features.

The biggest addition to the Underlords strategy game is the City Crawl campaign. A single-player mode, that explains a bit about what's going on. It seems "Mama Eeb" passed away, leaving a power vacuum in White Spire, with the four Underlords attempting to take control. City Crawl is where you do that, as you go through various different types of challenges and while doing so earn new outfits for the Underlords.

Also marking the beginning of the first proper ranked Season, along with the Battle Pass which has "over 100 rewards". Underlord's Battle Pass works similarly to other games, with it being an optional purchase since the game remains free to play but it gives you a bunch of extra cosmetics. The Battle Pass is $4.99/£3.75 but there are some free items you can get as you level up while you play it. The Battle Pass also gives you a few extra options in the City Crawl mode.

Full update notes can be seen here. Since it's a fresh season, there's a ton of balance changes on top of some heroes being rotated in while others now becoming unavailable. Also—Hats. Yes, hats have invaded Dota Underlords, a new item class that when equipped give an additional Alliance to the hero.

Overall, sounds like a pretty great update. I'm personally looking forward to the City Crawl and some more of the quick-match Knockout mode.

You can play Dota Underlords free on Steam.

What are the new outfits good for? :)

It was a bigger update than I was expecting and I like what I see (esp. rotating out Scrappy; may you never return).

I still wish Knockout was just slightly longer, another life or two to keep things going. I can't help feel that unless you get a steamrolling first hand/round, you might as well quit and join a new game most of the time since you are already behind. I don't think I've ever placed top 4 without getting at least 1-2 2 stars before the game began.

Removing Scrappy is a big issue for me since they were my favorite.

You can still win even if you don't get 2 stars in the first two rounds. Usually when that happens, I pick something else until I find something that comes up with a 2-star. Then I take those alliances and try to find more 2-stars off of that.

Being random, you just have to concede that you won't always get what you want and try to go with what the randomness is giving you.

City crawl is a bit underwhelming, but still a good/needed addition. I hoped for more variety in scenarios (a few scripted games or interesting rule variants), and it looks to be only a mix of normal multiplayer matches and puzzles/creep rounds. Which are fine, but are also quite short. Still, just having a single-player mode makes me happy and the tutorials I played looked quite good; maybe they will have more stuff in the paid additions.

The game in general looks fine, some fun things added. Still, I think my favorite version of Underlords would be one with the jail (and all the heroes), the creep rounds and the old slow pacing, but no underlords. Aces I could take or leave. I'll probably go back to playing occasionally now that it has been fully released, but I also kind of played enough already during the beta and just moved on.

True, alot of that is probably that I'm definitely not a pro at the game. It just feels that standard mode seems alot better to me in that regard despite taking the time investment. On the plus side, when you get dealt a crappy Knockout game it's only a few minutes until it's over.

This is a really good update, it gave DU a GUI update which makes the game a more finished feeling. The gameplay is fantastic and the balance is really getting better.
Big Thumbs up for Steam!!!!
