Endless Legend Linux Port Started Months Ago, Looked Good

Posted by , | Views: 14,612
As previously reported, a Linux version of Endless Legend was in the plans, as going by the CEO of Amplitude Studios. Unfortunately, said endeavour suffered from delays.

Nevertheless, after a bit more research by yours truly, it appears that it was announced a few months prior that the Linux port had actually been started, not simply been looked into, and was looking good to boot. Sadly, the Linux port would not make it in time for launch, and was even seen as an obstacle to the game's QA efforts for other operating systems.

As reported by AmpliMath, Amplitude's CEO:

QuoteThe Mac version has been running for some time now, but we started QA for real this week. There are very few bugs, but the few ones are a bit blocking and need to be fixed (pause menu not appearing, diplomatic background missing). As nothing is ever simple, these bugs only appear in some older versions of MacOS which we do not possess at the office… The Linux version has also been started and is looking good, but I am not sure we can make it for release, especially because it would jeopardize the QA efforts to the detriment of the Windows/Mac game stability.

It is unclear how much it would actually help, but it can never hurt to make yourself heard as a customer. For this reason, there are these threads in the Endless Legend forum on Steam where gamers are asking for Linux support.

OSX/Linux Support planned?

GNU/Linux - SteamOS version?

If it is not clear yet, I want to buy and play this game on Linux. Make yourselves heard, and make it so. In the mean time, Age of Wonders III has been confirmed for Linux and is seeing continuous development and updates by Triumph, the developer of the Age of Wonders franchise. It is fair to say that Age of Wonders III will be my medieval fantasy TBS fix long before Endless Legend.

About the game
Endless Legend is a 4X turn-based fantasy strategy game by the creators of Endless Space and Dungeon of the Endless. Control every aspect of your civilization as you struggle to save your homeworld Auriga. Create your own Legend!

Another sunrise, another day of toil. Food must be grown, industries built, science and magic advanced, and wealth collected. Urgency drives these simple efforts, however, for your planet holds a history of unexplained apocalypse, and the winter you just survived was the worst on record. A fact that has also been true for the previous five.

As you discover the lost secrets of your world and the mysteries of the legends and ruins that exist as much in reality as in rumor, you will come to see that you are not alone. Other peoples also struggle to survive, to grow, and perhaps even to conquer.

You have a city, a loyal populace, and a few troops; your power and magic should be sufficient to keep them alive. But beyond that, nothing is certain… Where will you go, what will you find, and how will you react? Will your trail be one of roses, or of blood?

Wow. To go from being so optimistic about the port to being as vague as they were the last time they talked about it, I'm guessing they just figured it wasn't worth the effort.

They will not be getting a penny from me until this is on linux. It's a shame, I wanted to play this. Civ 5 is native however, so I can already get my 4x fix elsewhere.

Regardless of what attitude toward bringing a game to Linux is being depicted by a developer, you should absolutely never buy a game before it is on Linux.

Age of Wonders III, on the other hand, has been confirmed for Linux and should release in the first quarter of 2015 considering the development updates that Triumph has been supplying.

I'm soooo glad I didn't support them in the past. I wanted to, because I'm a naive, optimistic person when it comes to ports and promises. But alas, this time I knew better.

Not a single cent you will see from me, until this is native and running well!

I think of myself as a gamer first, and a Linux user second. I'm willing to make compromises that many would not, in order to get my gaming fix. I run the Nvidia binary blob drivers, they are evil, but they are fast. On the other hand, I was happy to use bumblebee with my new laptop, it lets me use the FOSS Intel graphics stack for all but the most demanding games.

Steam for Linux has been such a mixed blessing for me. Beyond the binary nature of the Steam client itself, it's upsetting to have some of my games magically available, but not all of them. I end up using Wine or VMware to get the "real" Steam running, and then I just show up as yet another Windows user, which helps the lazier developers justify neglecting my preferred OS.

It's deeply conflicting.

Do you have absolute confirmation for Endless Legend coming to Linux?

How about we tell them to cancel the Windows verson becouse it is taking away from the Linux Q/A effort. (Lazy Wine Job)

What are you saying? That Endless Legend for Linux will be a wrapjob?

Don't hold your breath, guys. Yes, the game will eventually be ported to Linux, but it won't be any time soon. Truth is they have a lot of technical issues under Windows, especially on AMD cards. My 64 bit exe keeps crashing all the time, so I was forced to downgrade to the beta 32 bit in order to play, which as you might imagine means worse performance. And speaking of performance - the game is badly optimised. And I do mean - BAD. I have an MSI 290x and the thing has trouble providing consistent 60fps even on Beautiful (no AA), let alone Fantastic settings. I know its a 4X game so it doesn't really make much of a difference but still it shows bad optimisation. So, I don't think EL will get a Linux version any time soon. Obviously fixing the Windows/MAC is a priority (which is understandable).

PS Don't get me wrong - if you have Windows on your system you should totally get that game, like immediately - it is truly amazing. It is probably one of the best turn based strategies this side of Heroes III. But it still needs some fixing.

Ugh. Heroes of Might and Magic III is my favourite game of all time. You saying that just makes me want Endless Legend even more. Still, I will not buy Windows again just to play Endless Legend, and I have enough games to play as is currently. I can wait, especially with Age of Wonders III on the horizon.
