Stellaris: Ancient Relics announced for release on June 4th, pre-orders up

Posted by , | Views: 3,306

Stellaris is set to expand once again next month, with a very interesting story-focused expansion on June 4th. With the Ancient Relics expansion, you will be able to find and dig up the ruins of ancient civilizations and try to piece together their story.

To go along with the release date news, they also now have a new feature trailer:

Features it will include:

  • Said Ancient Relics: Collect valuable relics in your adventures as rewards for resolving game events or after completing a dig at a multi-stage archaeological site. Each relic gives significant benefits to your empire to aid in your interstellar escapades.
  • Dig In: Hit the dirt on a variety of enigmatic and alien worlds with new archeology sites available for your empire to study… or plunder. Each site begins a story with between one and six chapters to investigate. Retrace the history to discover artifacts and relics that can be boons to your empire.
  • Those Who Came Before: Encounter clues about two extinct Precursor civilizations, the Baol and the Zroni, the former a sprawling hivemind of plantoids, the latter some of the most powerful psionics to have ever lived. Players can investigate their home systems to understand who they were and, more importantly, what can be learned from their demise.
  • Relic Worlds: Once home to vibrant, advanced civilizations, these Relic Worlds now lie dead, replete with desolate ruins and dormant mysteries. Players can excavate guaranteed archeological sites on these worlds and bring to light powerful relics and artifacts.
  • Matter of Artifacts: Learning from history is much more than parables and antiquities, it can often be the key to understanding one’s own place in the galaxy. Utilizing archaeological research, discover Minor Artifacts, a new consumable resource type which can help empower one’s empire.

I quite like the sound of this one, adding in more to find as you explore space should make certain parts of Stellaris more interesting. The idea of digging up the juicy details on the downfall of some ancient civilization excites the space nerd inside of me, I'm pretty curious to see more of these relics too. Since I love the idea, I should be taking a look around the release.

Pre-orders are up too, which you can find on the Paradox Store and Steam. The price will be $9.99/£7.19/€9.99 at release.

Def interested in this, but I feel about DLC'ed out at the same time...

This looks pretty cool. I'm particularly fond of Stellaris story packs, as I feel like the game benefits more than most from additional content (event chains, anomalies, interesting worlds, small factions/enemies to interact with, etc). But the addition of an archeology system also fits particularly well with many of the anomalies and missions we already have - including the existing precursor event chains.

I got back to playing Stellaris recently, and man is this game amazing now. Vanilla 2.2 is so great, and with all the DLC (well, almost all, didn't get Megacorp yet) it is so replayable and full of possibilities.

I've not played Stellaris for very long, about 40 hours. (Which is not that long for 4x games...)

To me, those 5 bullet points sound like additional anomalies/special projects, which consist of a few short text screens, a small image and a 3d model. Is that about right?

Nope. They are creating a new system for archeological investigations (I guess some anomalies and special projects will now use this system). You find archeological sites (through surveys or in other ways), assign a scientist to work over time, he can progress in the chain or trigger random events. It has a new interface and everything, which you can see (along with more details, if you want) in this dev diary: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/stellaris-dev-diary-145-archaeology.1170190/ . Besides that, there is a new resource called "minor artifacts" that you earn and use on various actions, gaining tech boosts or benefits to your planets.

There are also Relics, special "items" you can collect and that give you both passive and active bonuses. Some are from previous DLC, like the throne of the Great Khan (a space conqueror introduced in Apocalypse); I think there are 3 of those (available even without the new DLC), plus 20 from Ancient Relics. You can see the new screen and the pictures for some relics in this dev diary: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/stellaris-dev-diary-148-relics-relic-worlds.1177865/ .

Also, what I'm really looking for is an update to the way, how Sectors work.

They have changed something in that area, according to the video.

And they claim it's the first step towards something more substantial. No idea whether it will end up being an improvement or not though.
