Comparing game performance when compiled vs pre-compiled?

I know it's known that compiling your own programs only brings negligible performance improvements, but I'd be interested in reading an article about that specifically for gaming. It'd be interesting to see what kinds of improvements you could see from compiling games like Xonotic or 0AD to try and get the highest FPS.
