Title: PayPal
Liam Dawe 26 Feb 2019
For those pledging their support on PayPal, just an update that the script I use to automate it had an issue so it might not have picked some of you up as supporters.

That's been fixed as of now :)

If those affected weren't picked up as supporters, they probably can't read this message in here either.

That's the point of this, they can now ;)

Dunno if this is a symptom of the earlier breakage, but I'm listed as a supporter rather than supporter+ despite donating more than £5.50/month. I'm not particularly bothered by it myself (when you have a name that gets you placed towards the bottom of almost any list, you stop caring about this sort of thing quite quickly :P), but there may be others who are incorrectly categorised too.

Apologies, the PayPal auto stuff is a bit newer, it's on the list to correct!

Coming back to this, here's the problem I have:

On Patreon, people select a specific tier, PayPal has none of that.

So how do we go about doing this correctly? Currently the amount paid is split across what the minimum monthly amount for Premium is and people on PayPal are given x months of it.

How do we factor Supporter+ into that? How would you want it done?

If you would do something like that from scratch, I suppose you would simply put the dollar amount in the database and subtract whatever monthly value is relevant from the total after each month. That particular value could be a tier or custom value selectable on the profile.

Switching back and forth when you already store in months is a bit tricky since the + tier is not double the normal one. You could do it by applying an extra factor, but that already sounds like a pain without trying to implement it.

To be honest, I'd be fine if you just leave it as it is. You haven't attached any benefits to the + tier, so I imagine that you have better ways to spend your time.

Yeah, it it's going to be a hassle to fix, I wouldn't worry about it. It seems that PayPal do have an API for this sort of stuff ([https://developer.paypal.com/docs/api/payments/v2/](https://developer.paypal.com/docs/api/payments/v2/)) but I have no idea if it would be useful in this situation (or how easy it would be to set up).

I think now, the way it will work will just be the exact same as Patreon.

Is the amount above x? Yes - give the higher supporter status for that month and check each time. That way it remains fair to PayPal and Patreon supporters.

Edit: Done. I still need to adjust it to take into account multiple payments in a month (we don't want it removed if you pay enough, then pay again less in the same month), but it's a start and no one currently pays more than once a month so it's not a problem currently.

Nice work, thanks for fixing it!

I donated a lump sum intending for it to be a 6 month supporter+ subscription, but am on the regular supporter list. I'm not bothered about it, but maybe it's another test case for your script.

When donating, there's no way for me to know exactly what people want it to be for currently.

As mentioned in a reply above, Patreon currently runs it on a month by month basis based on what was pledged each month. If I change that for PayPal, it's creates some unfairness.

It will become too complicated and take too much time, If I have to start manually processing individual PayPal donations and work out how long it will cover and how long that will be for Supporter Plus.

To have a Supporter Plus sub, as mentioned on the Support Us page, it needs to be a minimum of $7/£5.50 each month.

Edit: Since it wasn't previously clear, I've adjusted it for you for this month :)

I may have to look into some special PayPal integration, so people can pick between the two - that's likely the best way to go forwards on this. Will look into it.

Edit #2: I've added a sticky post in this forum to make it clear :). Until the integration is done, I will do it manually for people.

Edit #3: The PayPal script has also now been improved (as has our database) to take into account the date Support Plus ends, independently of the standard Supporter end date. This means, any additional smaller payments will now not overwrite Supporter Plus status :)

I don't know how much integration you have already done with Paypal, but wouldn't it be easier to just have an option in the profile for what to do with bulk donations? If you can do it manually now, that should be relatively easy to do.

Hmm, that would probably be the easiest and cheapest (time) way to do it. Can just make our script look for what people have set then, not a bad idea.

Is setting the high tier support a one time action or do you have to do that for every donation separately? If it's one time, can you switch me over as well? Otherwise I'll offer myself as a guinea pig at some point in the future. :D

Until I add something custom for it, it's a manual thing, yours is sorted for a good while ;)
