Any Dragon Age Veilguard players? Having troubles with crashes
Jarmer Nov 1
Anyone out there playing Dragon Age Veilguard? I would really like to, since I loved Inquisition and have been following this for ages, but I cannot AT ALL get the damn game to stop crashing. I can install and launch it, but no matter what settings I seem to fiddle around with the game just constantly crashes basically instantly once I actually go into the game past the main menu. I cannot even get past the intro cinematic. It hard locks the entire system too, forcing me to press the physical reboot button on the tower.

Anyone else experiencing this? There are some others in the steam discussions but that place is a dumpster fire of idiots so you can't ever get any meaningful help there.

There's some threads on the EA support forum, basically saying the exact same thing I am reporting, but so far no solutions.

I have tried in wayland and in x, no luck on either. I don't have this issue with any other games.

When I view my crash logs, I have two events:

1) plasmashell
2) xwayland

they do a crash dump at the same time when the system locks up. Here's a copy paste of those logs, I can't make any sense of them though, does anyone know how to read these damn things?

I'm guessing that plasma and xwayland are collateral damage. The game causes the kernel GPU driver to take a nosedive, in turn crashing everything that uses the GPU before it hard locks the system.

The dmesg log will probably show a GPU hang and unsuccessful reset.

Usually the go to place for solutions or workarounds are the github issue tracker for Proton or Mesa issues but I'm getting squat there for Veilguard

There's tons of reports on protondb too. Some people seem to get it running with one or both of "strand hair" and raytracing disabled.

Otherwise, it's obviously the included dei electrons being too incompetent to power it.

...

Sorry, trying to lighten the mood until something actually useful crops up. Holy bejeebus is this game a target for hate from a certain section of the so-called gaming population.

oh wow! I guess protondb took forever to update, last I checked yesterday afternoon there were 0 reports, now there are tons. Lots with the same issue as me. I hope this spurs bioware to do a patch. I will try the hair setting, hilarious if that's what's doing it.

And yeah, it's extremely disappointing when there's so much hate from the homophobes and anti-trans community on steam. I really wish they would at least TRY to do some kind of moderation that's just as simple as "game related discussion only" and would just delete all the insane hate from the idiotic anti-woke brain damaged losers.

... and it is hilarious!!! It was the hair setting. LOL. I guess they must be using some new gpu rendering code or something for the hair, because sure enough, disabling that made it run perfectly. And boy does it run well. My system is pretty old at this point (4 or 5 years) and I put everything on ultra and it ran at 50/60 fps in the busy town, 80+ fps outside of town. If I put it on high I'm sure I could get around 100 fps. But I'm happy with the look of ultra, it looks amazing! I don't much care for the art style direction they've gone with for this game, but that's just a personal preference, and very minor, so all good. It just seems more kiddy and cartoony than I ever remember Dragon Age being.

Thank you for the suggestion @emphy!!

for anyone else having this issue: the fix is to disable ray tracing (I never had this on to begin with though) and disable hair strands.
lol no issues here - never bought it.
