The creator of "Ultima" returns with a Kickstarter project - Shroud of the Avatar : Forsaken Virtues.
There will be a native Linux version.
Richard Garriott, the award winning designer and creator of the Ultima franchise, makes his triumphant return to the genre that earned him a place in the Hall of Fame and a Lifetime Achievement Award. Shroud of the Avatar is the first installment of Richard’s new vision and represents the reinvention of the classic, fantasy role-playing which he pioneered. A fantasy role-playing game that will focus more on player choices and discovery than on level grinding.

I loved everything ultima back in the days and when I saw the kickstarter title I was like weeeeeeeeeee.... then saw the video and heard all the buzz words and how they where already making real life stuff we can buy....at the end I was still unsure if it was single, (massive)multi, coop..... sorry but no, hope I get proven wrong and its a must buy when it comes out but not now.

Those who are looking for a successor to single-player ultima should be pretty happy with Shroud of the Avatar, since the DRM-free always-offline single-player mode is going to be in the same style. The single-player storyline is definitely being taken seriously, as demonstrated by the recent update about getting a professional fantasy author onboard to help RG flesh it out.
On the other hand, people pining for early days of UO may not get their wishes, because it sounds like there will be a lot more constraints on pvp then in early UO. Those of us who want a non-MMO multiplayer RPG (like NWN multiplayer) are still a bit confused about how the coop feature is going to work out.
