Splitgate 2 brings back the free to play FPS with portals from 1047 Games, with a Beta now available. However, it's another game that will not work on Desktop Linux, only the Steam Deck.

The first game actually had a Native Linux version, with the sequel dropping that so you need to play it with Valve's Proton compatibility layer. Only if you're on a Steam Deck, that is. Buried in their support page FAQ they noted:

Do you support Linux?

Linux support is still experimental internally and won’t be supported for the Open Beta, but we’re using the Steam Deck as a first step. Keep an eye out on our news page and social media for any updates.

However, that's not noted in their main website FAQ, which only mentions Steam Deck.

If you try to launch it on Desktop Linux, like Ubuntu / Kubuntu you'll just end up seeing this error:

It's now listed on our dedicated anti-cheat page.

I sent multiple emails to the developer well before release to speak about Linux / Steam Deck support, sadly they did not reply to any of the emails but at least we have our answer for now.

I'm hoping with the wider launch of SteamOS now available, that we see less developers locking their games to the Steam Deck. Although, we may end up seeing them lock it to SteamOS directly instead.

Pardon my French but this is absolute clown shit.

This is a bad trend.

Especially because Valve may not be interested in reverting it, as long as games work on SteamOS/Deck.

I have two Steam Deck's and I put this game on my ignore list.

SteamOS doesn't have any attestation so if this happens, desktop Linux would have an easy workaround by spoofing SteamOS.

a lot of people are against exclusives, now thanks to our lack of marketshare we have some games that on linux are exclusive to some devices, but on all other platforms arent exclusives...

and its not because vave paid then to have an exclusivity deal, but due to an issue on our ecosystem

It's not as if just locking to Steam Deck makes them any more secure, since you can unlock the filesystem anyway. Eventually, if SteamOS gets more user share, companies will have to adapt. Ideally, as the user share grows, Valve will be looking into ways to sort the situation out somehow.

Is this one one of the cases where setting 'steamdeck=1 %command%' doesn't help?
