Thankfully the Proton coders for Valve have managed to work quickly to get THE FINALS working on Linux / SteamOS and Steam Deck after it broke again.

At least this time around it really wasn't the developer blocking anything, just a case Proton needing more tweaks to get a reasonably popular online shooter working again.

Writing on the official GitHub developer Paul Gofman wrote that it "should hopefully be solved (or improved)" with Proton Experimental when using the bleeding-edge Beta branch for it. Many reports on there and in THE FINALS' Discord show it does indeed fix the issue of the game kicking you out of matches.

Our anti-cheat page was updated to note this.

Likely the next proper update to Proton Experimental directly will have the fix without the need for a Beta. But that could be a few days, a week or longer.

THE FINALS | Release Date: 8th December 2023

I think the bigger question is, why does this keep happening? emoji Someone at Valve needs to get in touch with the devs and figure out how they manage to keep breaking this game every time on Linux, so it can be avoided in the future. I don't think it's sustainable that Valve has to fix it every time again when it breaks.

Developers have direct contact with Codeweavers and the game receives a small amount of testing on Linux before updates. As far as I know *no one else* performs routine testing on Proton, Embark Studios are the exception here. In an alternative future the game would break much more often and get fixed in a longer period.

That's basically just a year ago. It would basically break every major update at least. It's a lot less common nowadays.
