Publisher MicroProse revealed Deck & Conn, a single-player turn-based tactics game that places players in command of a Cold War-era nuclear corvette — in space.

It's being developed by a new studio, FUNTIME ELECTRICS, from Elissa Black the co-creator of Objects in Space, Swords of Freeport, and Metrocide. Deck & Conn is a homage to classics like the 1971 Star Trek mainframe game. I do love my space games and chunky retro graphics and all things Star Trek, so this looks like it was made for me.

More about it from the press release:

In Deck and Conn, players must lead their crew through a relentless forever-war among the stars. Every patrol brings tough choices: respond to distress calls, capture or destroy enemy ships, upgrade your systems, and manage scarce resources — all while shaping the legacy of your vessel and crew.

Whether facing the branching challenges of a dynamic campaign or honing skills in standalone tactical scenarios, Deck and Conn demands precision, adaptability, and decisive leadership.

Highlights:

  • Command a Cold War-inspired nuclear space corvette in a retro-futuristic sci-fi universe.
  • Turn-based tactical combat with limited resources and intricate system management.
  • Dynamic campaign with war patrols, ship upgrades, and crew promotions.
  • Standalone combat scenarios to master tactical fundamentals.
  • Capture or destroy enemy vessels to gain rewards and shape your ship’s reputation.
  • Hand-crafted pixel art inspired by early ’90s MicroProse classics.
  • Follow HQ orders and make high-stakes decisions in the endless war.

Used to be when we talked about "The way the future was" we were talking about the 50s version of the future, with flying cars everywhere and transparent weather domes over cities and huge talking mainframe computers but also intelligent robots.
Now we can also have the way the future was in the 80s.

True. And in the 1950s and earlier they might have talked about "the way the future was" in the 1800s, as imagined by authors like Verne. Although that particular way is still very much alive in modern steampunk.

There's something I find charming about the retro-future aesthetic, perhaps because the actual future is quite boring compared to what was imagined a century ago.

This game looks pretty neat, and seeing the MicroProse logo hits me right in the nostalgia. It brings back memories of the good ol' days playing Gunship and Airborne Ranger on my Commodore 64.
