On top of SteamOS 3.7.20 Beta and improvements to the Steam Workshop so mods can support multiple game versions, we have a Beta UI overhaul for Steam games.

For various games on Steam you can opt into a Beta for upcoming releases to test, or previous game version releases. Most developers don't keep their old game versions up, but perhaps with the Steam Workshop changes more will actually do this now. Players have been asking for years and years for ways to keep old versions around, so hopefully this is work towards seeing that become more normal to see.

Here's how it currently looks:

And the revamped UI available in the Steam Client Beta:

The main client changelog:

General
  • Added display of selected store tags to app filter/collection dialog.
  • Reworked the Application Properties -> Betas UI.
  • Fixed crash on Windows when certain force feedback gamepad drivers are installed.
Big Picture Mode
  • Fixed incorrect controller glyph in library filter selection dialog and filter description.
  • When connecting a new controller, the glyphs in the footer will now update immediately instead of after the first input from the controller.
Steam Input
  • Improved handling of issues when a controller disconnects while the controller configurator is open.
  • Fixed changes to sliders on the Gyro calibration page not sticking.
  • Fixed an issue with Steam Input API joystick actions not getting As Joystick options for Trackpad/Gyro.
  • Added Gyro to Joystick Deflection option: Drag Center Point. When enabled, moving the controller past its maximum deflection angle will drag the center point with it, so that movement back toward the center will immediately register.

And the Steam Deck changelog:

General

  • Fixed a case where the 'Format SD Card' would remain greyed out after a microsd card is inserted.
  • Fixed incorrect controller glyph in library filter selection dialog and filter description.
  • When connecting a new controller, the glyphs in the footer will now update immediately instead of after the first input from the controller.
  • Reworked the Application Properties -> Betas UI.
Desktop Mode
  • Added display of selected store tags to app filter/collection dialog.

Not perfectly on topic, but wasn't there chat recently about Steam going 64bit? Or was that Windows only?

Windows went 64bit, but there was work on the Steam Linux Runtime for 64bit. We'll see it one day...

Yeah, it would be great if more developers retained old versions. It would be better if it was mandatory. Being forced to update when regressions are pushed is never going to be cool with me.

I imagine that most developers choose not to retain older versions because of support issues. Having to determine which version of the game is being used to troubleshoot the user's problem would be a pain in the butt! Of course, the solution would be a notice from the developer that they will only provide support for the latest version.

It reminds me of a bug report experience I had long ago with Morrowind. I had discovered an issue and decided to report it to Bethesda. I had to applaud the tech on this one. I was so embarrassed. It turned out I hadn't installed the latest patch, which had been out for awhile. The Bethesda tech, once realizing this, just politely told me that the bug had already been addressed in the latest patch and provided a link. 😆
