A new DLC for Mount and Blade: Warband has been released to mixed reception due to it being rather buggy, but it did come with Linux support as standard.
Reviews have been pretty bad, with many stating that its a blatant copy of the mod Brytenwalda which I cant confirm or deny. Many also state that performance is bad and it "wants you to check out your desktop every five minutes".
Nonetheless, it's exciting to see it with a on-launch Linux support! I also saw one review which said most of the performance issues could be fixed with an open-patch TaleWorlds released a few days after release. Check that out if you experience any problems!
Check out Mount & Blade: Warband - Viking Conquest on Steam.
About the game
From the creators of the popular "Brytenwalda" mod, "Viking Conquest" is a brand new DLC for Mount & Blade Warband! This single and multi player DLC brings Mount & Blade to historical Dark Age Britain, complemented by authentic scenes and cultures. The DLC features a story mode with a complex plot, where choices have real consequences, as well as a standard sandbox mode in an all new setting, with expanded options and controls. Online battling also takes on its own flavour, with special modes like Coastal Assault and Warlord.

The reason many people are saying that it is "a blatant copy of the mod Brytenwalda" is because it is the same people that made Brytenwalda that made this DLC, as way to continue development of the best Mount and Blade mod IMO. It is buggy at the moment, but the devs are releasing daily beta patches, so i still don't regret my purchase. Especially since i have played hundreds of hours of Brytenwalda, so i thought they deserve some support. They just need to fix a memory leak and some crashes and it will be the best Warband.

I agree it's an amazing game, I never really judge games harshly as most people do and let things slide but I do get the hate for this DLC but man is it amazing. When it is stable for linux I will likely play it for a good long time... for now windows seems to run it stable for me.

I'll be purchasing this once they iron out all (most) the bugs.

And the visual bugs, and the atrocious performance. Right now you should not buy this, it's unplayable for me.

Don't buy it now! The main game Linux port is already pretty bad (regular crashes, slow loading times, graphical artifacts), but this one takes the cake, it's unplayable... And it's not just Linux, just take a look at those reviews...
The game works great for me :)

The game works great for me :)So you don't get loads of crashes, ridiculous load times and bad performance? That's surprising.

Nope. Only on Windows it runs bad, but I dont dual-boot anymore.

Nope. Only on Windows it runs bad, but I dont dual-boot anymore.Did you test if it runs badly on your PC on Windows? What are your system specs and graphics driver? I'm running this on Linux, 64bit Gentoo Unstable, GTX660 with Nvidia's drivers (346.22). I can't play this for longer than 10 minutes without a crash to desktop, performance sometimes is horrid unless I switch to the lowest graphics settings (world map is still awful even then). The vanilla game only crashes once in a while.

Yeah, some people mentioned something about M&B's engine pre-loading *everything*, so mods with high textures tend to crash a lot. FYI, my specs are similar to what you've mentioned of yours (funtoo amd64 current, GTX660Ti, AMD FX8350 OCed to 5.3GHz, 32GB RAM, M&B installed on an SSD) and I can play it for quite a while on low settings. I've found that I either have to have textures set to maximum or minimum - it seems like setting the slider in the middle actually makes my crashes happen *more* frequently (my guess: the process of resizing textures eats up more memory temporarily, causing a quicker crash than just loading the full resolution texture files). I can *almost* play normally on "Very High" settings right now, but it tends to crash toward the end of loading a scene. "High" and "Medium" actually crash *much* earlier than "Very High". "Low" gives me around 2-3 hours between crashes, which can be playable as long as I remember to save frequently.
I love what I've been able to play of Viking Conquest, but I would agree that it's more frustrating right now than it's worth. I'm playing Warsword Conquest until VC is more stable (and then I'm playing VC until the next version of Warsword Conquest is released).

Currently Kubuntu 14.10 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti, beta drivers. 8 GB RAM, Intel i5 processor.

For me M&B crashes at random... I can play for hours before a crash or for mere minutes before a crash. Very random. Having said that M&B is a fantastic game and the crashes haven't really tainted my opinion of the game.

Its never crashed for me. Well, it did crash when I cranked up the battle size to 500 editing the config file. But hey, thats my fault :D It ran fine, until I came into a battle with 340 men involved. lol

I'm surprised to see that people had/have issues with that port. It was running great on my end since day one. (770, proprietary beta). Hope they gonna fix it soon for you guys.
Ps. I'm talking about base game here:)

The base game has also been very stable for me too. So I guess they are talking about the DLC. Anyway, M&B is great.
