News - Minecraft (Java) is going through quite an overhaul for the upcoming Vibrant Visuals update

I still wonder why MS decided to rewrite Minecraft with the Bedrock version. Seems like a lot of maintenance burden they added on themselves.

I got a lifetime premium account before they stopped offering those several years ago. So I hope it doesn't go downhill anytime soon. If it does ever, what could replace it? Moddb?

Scott mentioned how this isn't some "corporate 'exit' or a backroom deal" but them "doing something I probably should’ve done years ago: taking care of myself".

Isn't that nearly the definition of a corporate exit via the classic backroom deal?

Or have I missed that time when he offered the modding community the opportunity to take over the site and have it managed by a non-profit?

Maybe the new owners will be less restrictive about what mods they will allow. That would be a positive change.

In fairness, Bandcamp still works much as it used to. For now.
I was gonna say something to that effect. I had my finger on the Eject button the whole time and was so happy when Epic passed it on to someone else. So far, so good.

Talk about scope creep. Now they're adding action adventures?

You turn off the enhanced visuals and it'll probably still run on a potato.

Not a "backroom deal" but there could hardly be less information on the actual deal.

I go to NexusMods almost daily. I love following along each day watching new mods come out, tracking ones I like, watching for updates. I've subscribed in the past and I should do again.
This is worrying though. Nobody wants to see a fan site sold, and there's other mod websites out there that are explicitly attempting to made our community a monetized one. To say nothing of Patreon modders, of course.

Thanks for the post; just deleted my account.

I only used Nexus once to get a mod for Zone of the Enders The 2nd Runner MARS, and that required me to make an account. Now that I've long since applied the mod, I no longer need the account.

So I am reminded of what Ethan Diamond said when he sold Bandcamp to Epic...

"... while over the years we’ve heard from other companies who wanted us to join them, we’ve always felt that doing so would only be exciting if they strongly believed in our mission, were aligned with our values, and not only wanted to see Bandcamp continue, but also wanted to provide the resources to bring a lot more benefit to the artists, labels, and fans who use the site. Epic ticks all those boxes."

In case anyone's forgotten, Epic sold Bandcamp on a year later, to Songtradr, "a music platform that helps to facilitate brands, content creators, and digital platforms in their use of music for licensing purposes". Ethan hasn't said whether Songtradr believes in his mission.

In fairness, Bandcamp still works much as it used to. For now.

So is the DRM just a blind spot, or is there some technical reason that stuff can't, or is very hard to make, run in Wine?

I did - I don't follow the retro scene that much, and that's what I get for relying on my memory and not Google. Actually, wasn't there an Atari 1020 now that I think about it? Okay, not making that mistake again. Google tells me there was a 1040, not a 1020 (technically the Atari 1020 was a plotter, who knew??). So I'm just confused! emoji

News - POSTAL 2 Redux announced, a full remake of the unhinged classic
By ScottCarammell, 16 Jun 2025 at 1:35 pm UTC

they canceled the linux version for postal 4, so i am pretty sure they mean proton
iirc Postal 4 native linux isn't cancelled, it's just low-priority; and even if it was cancelled, that's mostly because Unreal Engine is horrible at making Linux ports and they'd be spending a bunch of time making a port that may not even run well. This is using Unity which, while not perfect at native ports, is a far cry from the nightmare Unreal Engine is and so I can see them springing for a native port. RWS definitely has vested interest in Linux given how long they've supported the platform, even well before it was as prominent as it's becoming now. I could see them wanting to get back into native Linux support given how long it's been since their last game to natively support Linux, the original Postal Redux.

I had both an Atari ST and an Amiga 1020
Pointless nitpick: The Amiga 1020 is a floppy drive, not a computer. emoji Did you mean the Amiga 1200 with its fancy AGA graphics?

I don't remember having worse controls in Another World on my Amiga 500 than on my friend's Atari ST. We both preferred playing the game on my Amiga due to the prettier visuals.

Your commodore bias is showing! I had both an Atari ST and an Amiga 1020 and somehow ended up with this game on both. The ST version felt much snappier, compared to the Amiga's slightly sluggish controls.
I cannot disagree with that! I meant "lesser" in terms of technical fidelity, as the Amiga version had better quality sound and, if I'm not mistaken, better colours. I never did play it on the Atari ST, so I don't know how different it felt, but yes, the Amiga version did feel a bit sluggish. That said, so does the Anniversary Edition (to me at least), so maybe I'm just bad at the game emoji

the original version is the Amiga version (though the lesser Atari ST version released at the same time)

The ST version felt much snappier, compared to the Amiga's slightly sluggish controls. I loved both those machines equally. Actually, maybe my bias is showing, because I bought the ST first and only got the Amiga a couple of years later. The Amiga was silky smooth in some games, but I still prefer the crispness of the ST's games in a lot of cases.

I just hope they don't conflate "big sales" to "must use Denuvo". I'm still disappointed by that. I'd have bought Stellar Blade otherwise though.

I guess I'll just keep playing Clair Obscur, Tainted Grail, Monster Train 2 and Dune:Awakening, eh? It's been an expensive June.

Maybe it's time to overcome childhood trauma and finish it. emoji
