News - REMATCH is out now and works great on Linux, SteamOS and Steam Deck
By gradyvuckovic, 20 Jun 2025 at 3:45 am UTC

It's kinda crazy to me that it's taken so long for such an obvious concept to be executed, and even crazier to me that the first version we got of a game where you actually play as a footballer controlling an actual individual and just aiming for the goals and passing the ball to your team mates organically... came in the form of a game with rocket powered cars... before a game where you just kick a ball with your feet.

Like this is the football game I've wanted since I first played football games on like the Sega Genesis, so excuse me, I don't mean to sound insulting about it, but to me it just seemed like a really really obvious concept that should have happened a long time ago and I never understood why developers didn't make games like this. I don't know what it was that caused football games to get locked into this concept of playing with a topdown view controlling multiple players, but it's nice to see a game that finally breaks out of that concept. Kudos to the developers for finally actually making my dream football game!

So, well and truly overdue, but very much a welcome game release, glad to see it. Will definitely try it out, I really enjoyed rocket league before 'everything that happened to it', so I might love this.

Shine on, you crazy diamond!

All these years, and I never realized the comma was there. I always heard it as "shine on you, crazy diamond", which didn't make any sense lol.

Thank you for this!

Godot is quietly coming for Unity and it's fascinating times.

Last year, Blender powered a wildly profitable Oscar nominee, something that seemed impossible for a long time.

It's just a matter of a few years before Godot is doing similar.

If I may, what Oscar nominee would that be? I've never heard about this and that sounds really interesting.

News - Gears of War: Reloaded is officially Steam Deck Verified and SteamOS Compatible
By M@GOid, 19 Jun 2025 at 10:55 pm UTC

For me, Gears of War was what the 3D versions of Contra should have been. The setting is very similar, and it would be similar to what Nintendo achieved in the transition from 2d to 3d in the Mario games. Instead, what we got as a series of uninspired games that were a stain in the Contra franchise.

I hope they release a demo, because there is no way I'm buying this at launch.

If they need to save money, they could always do layoffs and replace with AI. Like how things are in the US basically.

There shouldn’t be a donation of a company that makes money off a product and has employees. Polish salaries are already pretty low.

I don't even like tipping at restaurants even though it's customary in the US.

If GoG is that hard up then they should simply raise prices instead of rattling the tin cup.

News - GOG now ask for donations when you buy games

A bit off topic, but not fully either...

Every time a "GOG doing X" or "Steam doing Y" news comes up, the comments section is like this, people writing and reading the same over and over...
Guys don't you ever get bored? And I'm saying that for the two sides really, how is that interesting to anyone repeating those arguments? I don't think anybody get convinced here to one side or another (or really rarely).
Sometimes it feels a bit like reading bots unfortunately. I'm pretty sure Liam is bored too (I think he said that in the past).

I personally stopped making arguments on this topic, because I don't think I can add anything relevant that's not have been said anymore and I don't expect people to change their stance (especially this hot one, I mean).
I'm saying that without hostility because I like GOL, I'm sure we can do better but I really don't know how. Maybe some of you will think about it. It's like a message in a bottle.

Now on this donations thing, if it can help GOG from people who can afford it then it's good.
But yeah it might be an alarming sign to the GOG's health, I don't know, but I don't think it can do any damage as long as it remains optional. It's too early to say.

News - GOG now ask for donations when you buy games
By kaiman, 19 Jun 2025 at 8:13 pm UTC

I first read the article headline "GOG now ask for donations when you buy games" and I am like "Hell no! Raise your prices if you don't make enough money!". But then the article states that it is for the game preservation program, and I think that's a legitimate cause.

Because truth is, as beloved as some of those classics are, getting them to run flawlessly on modern OSes, much less keeping them running in the future, must cost more than they will realistically bring in as revenue.

So I guess I might send some money that way with my next purchase, even though I personally would want to see more modern indie games making their way to GOG. Maybe those would make the money to preserve another game or two?

Different people, different tastes. I find the tip request non-controversial. GOG has a unique mission and deserves much better than almost 0% profit. That I find sad. It could be implemented better, I guess, by specifying some particular cause or project. Also, I would appreciate tips for developers, during purchase and especially after finishing the game, even if GOG took their cut. Currently there's no option to send some additional money their way, on any platform.

I buy all games that I can on GOG, because I believe that no DRM beats platform availability. Wine works well now. Realistically, we will most likely be able to play Windows games even 20 years from now, but not Linux games, due to frequent API breakage.

Yes, there are some DRM-free games even on Steam. But it's a completely different story. You have no information, no guarantee, it changes in time, and it takes a lot of time sometimes to verify and create a standalone copy of such games. I know because I do it. GOG is a paradise compared to it. I just download an installer and store it on my NAS. It's mine forever (sure, I have backups). Shut up and take my money.

News - GOG now ask for donations when you buy games
By poiuz, 19 Jun 2025 at 5:04 pm UTC

It is wrong to say "Steam is DRM". Steam offers a DRM system, and it offers DRM'd games as well as games without DRM. You can copy the latter games freely and use them wherever you want. (You might not be allowed to, but that's not what DRM is about.)
Steam is always DRM. Just try to start a game with the same account on two PCs. Steam DRM restricts this. There are workarounds (DRM free games can be started without Steam & or being offline) but this doesn't change the fact that Steam restricts access to all your games (even if the games are actually DRM free).

even if I do recall that there was some controversy around a title which could not be played multiplayer if it weren't launched from Galaxy (quick Brave search shows Aragami 2 and Monster Train)
Online mutliplayer is basically always DRMed, even on GOG.

For me the anti-DRM stance is more important than GNU/Linux support... even if I do recall that there was some controversy around a title which could not be played multiplayer if it weren't launched from Galaxy (quick Brave search shows Aragami 2 and Monster Train). I already have my favourite games on GOG backed up, but I do think I'll start adding a little extra when buying stuff (as I said, I consider DRM to be worse than I consider GNU/Linux support to be nice).

News - Steam Deck and SteamOS hit 20,000 playable games
By Purple Library Guy, 19 Jun 2025 at 4:24 pm UTC

I think you're mistaking what is the battle and what is the war, here.
Linux user share is the war. Linux native game share is a battle, which will ultimately be won automatically if the wider war is won. And lost automatically if the wider war is lost.

The Linux user share war is won by people switching to Linux and buying devices, say to play games on, which happen to have Linux on them. And one big question people will ask when considering whether to switch, or to buy such a device, is "Can I play my games?"

If the answer is entirely or mostly "No", they will not switch or buy. We saw this with the Steam Machine, which admittedly had other problems, but that was key among them. Even "sorta half and half" is not good enough.

If the answer is entirely or mostly "Yes", they may switch or buy. We see this now with the Steam Deck, which is selling very well. Since the introduction of the Steam Deck, the Linux share on Steam has gone from less than 1% to approaching 2.5%. Some of that is from the Deck itself, some is from increases in desktop Linux. Both of these increases are certainly dependent on the effectiveness of Proton.

If this increase continues for a few more years, Linux will be hitting numbers that make it worth money to pay attention to. Then native Linux games will certainly increase. I think that since Proton became a big thing, native Linux titles have decreased some, but it hasn't been nearly as much as I was expecting. The ease of using Proton seems to have been offset somewhat by increased buzz around the Steam Deck and SteamOS. But, if Linux user share had kept stagnating, native Linux game share would also, and probably in fact have continued to decline.

So, if someone wanting native Linux games were given a magic wand, which they could wave to kill Proton so developers wanting to target Linux would have to go native, this would be tactically a bare win in the very short term, but strategically disastrous. They would be fools to wave that wand.

No promised native Linux client = no donations. It's literally as simple as that. As long as they continue ignoring Linux I have no interest in spending any money on GOG, for games or otherwise.Steam ftw

Well, here's the other shoe dropping on that inane marketing: they're not making enough, and they can't increase their cut or pricing with Steam just over there selling most of the same games (even when acknowledging some of them are packaged in a more sloppy fashion vs GOG).

I mean... sure, if this approach works out for them. Time to start planning some backups, I guess.

@Eike
It is wrong to say "Steam is DRM".
I don't want to start into this argument again... Technically, you are right in saying the Steam client is not DRM. I think @Lib-Inst was simply referring to the fact that the Steam client is initially required to install the game whereas the offline installers are self-contained. So, more of a "you cannot install a game bought on Steam without the Steam client" or "installation requires the Steam client" kind of complaint.

Umm ... MSI Afterburner?

After all, this is the Windows-based tool that MangoHUD is reportedly based on.

Personally, though, I found that MangoHUD is more intuitive and easier to configure. I was also a little startled when Mod Organizer 2 popped complaining of incompatibilities with Afterburner and recommended disabling it.

I like the idea of Valve adding more MangoHUD-like features to the Steam overlay.

Sure someone wrote an FAQ somewhere?

* You get a licence to use software, be it from Steam, GoG, your floppy disc box, or Linux.

* It is wrong to say "Steam is DRM". Steam offers a DRM system, and it offers DRM'd games as well as games without DRM. You can copy the latter games freely and use them wherever you want. (You might not be allowed to, but that's not what DRM is about.)
