What have you been playing on Linux lately and what do you think?
Tomb Raider (2013) - started playing this today. I've been wanting to play this type of game for a while. It's a good game, played 6 hours so far. Enjoying the story, the game play, but I've a few minor niggles with it. I guess I've been spoilt playing games like Dying Light, Mad Max, 7 Days To Die - which are proper open-world games. Tomb Raider isn't entirely linear, but it isn't fully open-world either. Very happy with the graphics, voice acting, and story so far.
TO be honest - the fact that it's a kinda linear adventure game is what I love about Tomb Raider. I'm open worlded out!

Quoting: GuestPillars of Eternity (including expansions), Shadowrun Returns, Albion Online (about 100 hours or so since release). Quite frustrating with Albion Online and the constant lag/server issues (and DDoS-attacks and whatnot). And the other day I got the black screen (tm), which made me go bonkers and now I'm taking a break.

Yes - I bought and paid for a month but the game is near unplayable because of server issues and lag. I'm optimistic that they will fix their problems (though that recent DDOS attack doesn't help) and will check back in a few months.

Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth released with day-1 Linux support, it’s fantastic

I read the books and thoroughly enjoyed the first two but the third one was very weak (and the sales / reviews reflect that). Not a day one purchase for me (still a little salty about that third book) but it's on my Steam list for later.

Realms of Arkania: Star Trail, a hardcore RPG with turn-based combat has released with Linux support

Never played, or even heard of, the original series. What is a "hardcore rpg?" What sort of games would you compare it to? The trailer doesn't give much indication of what the game really is.

I own the old Classic version of this, Dos-box'ed and available to Linux via Steam.

Dungeon Warfare has turned out to be a very enjoyable Tower Defence style game. Picked it up on discount about 3 weeks ago, and played 32 hours so far. It is different to usual TD games, because it is set in a Dungeon Keeper setting, and you can block the path of the opposing Heroes and cause them to take different routes and then use the existing dungeon features to your strategic advantage. Heartily recommended. Great for a short (say 20 minutes) gaming session, and then another one, and then another one..

7 Days To Die has been something I've really enjoyed playing over the past 4 months. In that time, I've managed to play a massive 300+ hours of this game. What's more, I'm not feeling so tired of it, that I want to give up. Some games, you play them and then finishing the game is an annoying grind, and you aren't actually enjoying it any more. The only reason I'd put this game down, is because I am now so familiar with the mechanics, that I'm ready for something fresh. But, all things considered, happy to fire it up and "Carry on Surviving" It has taken me 300 hours to get to the point where it is a little bit stale. A fantastic game.

Oh Sir: The Insult Simulator - picked this up a week ago, as the lowest tier of the Humble micro Jumbo bundle. Played a number of short sessions, totalling 4 hours. Some online sessions versus other people, some against the PC, and some Tournaments against the PC. Unlocked most of the playable characters, and in the online games, I've won about 7:1 against other humans, haha. It's quite fun, good for a short game once in a while.

Enjoying the story, the game play, but I've a few minor niggles with it. I guess I've been spoilt playing games like Dying Light, Mad Max, 7 Days To Die - which are proper open-world games. Steam now has over 3,500 games for Linux, with GOG having over 700

I don't think you can really put DOSbox into "linux games", especially since most of them are abandoware and GOG just put standard dosbox config with them.

Well it is actually Codemasters the British publisher that owns the rights to that one and if you could convince enough people to pester them about it they are fairly pro linux so you never know.

Quoting: wolfyrionThe biggest surprise that I had with GOG is when I discovered that is a Cypriot based company :D
(I was like no way!!! but then I understood the reasons like all other foreign companies that have a company in my country)

That came as a surprise to me. I thought they were based in eastern Europe.

CD Prokect Red is based in Poland the game studio, The commercial arm however is based in Cyprus (gog)

Yeah Dirty bomb is okay but the complete random nature of weapons and abilities angers and annoys me

I solve that by using a different exit and then wrecking all the campers,if you play as a team the spawn camping does not happen.

And how often does that happen in random online games ? be honest :P

Teamwork rarely but you can normally convince at least one to come with in chat as long as you dont start with an insult in the chat.

Awesome looking mech combat game 'BATTLETECH' has slipped into a 2018 release
By Schattenspiegel, 15 August 2017 at 9:46 pm UTC

Will be interesting to see how this turns out. Definitely high on my whishlist but there have been so many flaws alongside so much promise in previous BT games that one can only hope for the best. The timeline setting at least was a wise choice and if they manage to stay away from to much mech loadout customisation resulting in boring multiplayer meta this could actually become a really good game.

I'm always floored by just how damned hard Simon works on his game. Amazing stuff.

I wonder if an "overview" function would be good; a toggle that zooms out to fit the full base in the window - as opposed to zooming all the way out.

Quoting: soulsourceIt's a nice remake. Yet, while I can't name any real reason, I still prefer the original DOS game (which btw. is available at GoG and runs pretty well in DOSBox).

The original trilogy is also available on Steam with Linux support, on GOG, even being a DOSBox game as you say, only Windows and Mac are officially available.

Ouch, looks like Morrowind with better character models...

I'm ok with retro graphics, but this just looks cheap :o .

I played both Blade of Destiny and the original Star Trail. Oh, character creation, they don't make things this way anymore (unless it's a RoA remake ;) ). I was a fan to the extent that I was learning German by reading "Und Altaia brannte" - a novel set in the Schwarze Auge setting.

So, after a thought, I might actually buy it :)

Oh, and Bambaladam FTW.

I played one of the Realms of Arkania games back in the day (Shadows over Riva) and I liked it very much. I got the Blade of Destiny remake off Steam a few years back and it was a horrible, broken mess, looking terrible and running at sub-20 fps on my rig. I hope this one's better.

Steam now has over 3,500 games for Linux, with GOG having over 700
By Crazy Penguin, 15 August 2017 at 8:15 pm UTC

Quoting: Sir_DiealotAnother perspective on Steam vs GOG:
GOG has 2100 games, 700 for Linux, that's 1/3 of the games.
Steam has about 15000 games, 3500 for Linux, that's less than 1/4.
By ratio, GOG wins.

Well, no. GOG has still a bad Linux support. There are many games with native Linux support which are not on GOG. Galaxy is still missing too. It's a shame! On the other hand I'm not really surprised about the bad support as the "Boss" from CDProject doesn't like Linux, which he made clear many times.

BTW: If you count non-offical supported Games, which are running with DOSBox and Wine, then GOG has more then 1800 Games running on Linux.

Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth released with day-1 Linux support, it’s fantastic
By Plintslîcho, 15 August 2017 at 7:51 pm UTC

I totally agree. I've been playing the game the last couple of days and it's fantastic!
The artwork is beautiful. The characters remind me of old animation films and the attention to detail, like their reddened noses and skin in the cold, harsh weather really adds to the atmosphere. The music is beautiful as well and the voice acting is absolutely outstanding!

This game oozes atmosphere. It may not be a classical adventure game. But as an interactive novel (or whatever such a game is called) it works great.

I was sceptical first because I usually don't like Daedalic adventures much (except for their marvelous art work) and was also put off by some of the brutality in the first trailers. But now I'm really impressed by the game. I know that Daedalic will get a lot of flak for not delivering (another) classical adventure here. But I think they did a good job and have produced a great game with grandiose atmosphere and that's more important to me than tough nuts to crack.
