Hey Liam, GamingOnLinux was referenced on the tech news yesterday on Paul's Hardware about the Steam payment provider content removal fiasco. It starts at about 8:54 in the video on YouTube. If you're already aware, my bad. I just watched the video now. lol

There are key benefits if Linux goes mainstream. Hardware (and the software attached to hardware, so basically complete control over specialized complicated hardware), anti-cheat, and software. Only the last of those is very mixed as blessings go: On the up side, all the software that we're missing, like Adobe stuff, will run on Linux. On the down side, software like Adobe stuff will run on Linux, and be just as annoying and subscriptiony and all as they are on Windows . . .

I don't think it will make a huge difference to the desktop experience otherwise.

So you don't get complete control over your troops, but it's probably still not nearly as frustrating as that WW I game where you just get to look at maps and reports and you have to yell orders through a WW I style radio.

News - Valve gets pressured by payment processors with a new rule for game devs and various adult games removed
By Cyba.Cowboy, 21 Jul 2025 at 7:43 pm UTC

This has happened numerous times over the years across multiple industries and it blows my mind that in 2025, we still don't really have alternative payment processors and stores which permit uncensored adult content (within the confines of the law, of course)... If I had the time and money to do so, I'd quite literally setup both myself for the potential returns on such a project alone!

My take: If US payment processors get a say what is and isn't allowed on Steam, so should every government in whose jurisdiction Steam sells any games.

They do though - we've had loads of games removed because of the police state country I live in (Australia)... And we're not the only ones that have caused this to happen.

They'll will get distributed elsewhere and funded with other payment methods. I wouldn't worry about those games.

That's often not the case, though... Quite a lot of the time those games simply have no alternative options for stores and / or payment processors. I am aware of at least one game that successfully moved over to SubscribeStar; but quite often these games disappear into the nether.

I am glade to see less of those games on Steam but I think the better way would be to get a working Age verification system.

God no.

We already have too much of a push for identification verification with third party here in Australia... Nobody wants Brother to expand his reach to game stores.

But no one has addressed the elephant in the room here. Look over the list of the games being banned. The topic of these games is incest. Now, I can't speak to European regulations -- nor can I speak to Japanese ones either -- but here in North America, incest is illegal.

Not my forte to be honest, and I'm pretty sure it's illegal in Australia as well... But why not just hide these entries from countries where it's deemed illegal?

News - Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 is out with new vehicles, auto drive, AMD FSR 4, Intel XeSS 2 and more
By Cyba.Cowboy, 21 Jul 2025 at 7:37 pm UTC

As for No Man's Sky, this is an excellent comparison. People did a 180 and forgave that game, too. I have played a bit but it's very hard to enjoy properly knowing it's a similar situation to Cyperpunk 2077.

Yeah, but with No Man's Sky, I'm still getting monthly or bi-monthly updates / upgrades to the game... So despite all the criticism, they've certainly gone above and beyond in the updates / upgrades department.

It's probably the same for Cyberpunk 2077, but I never really followed the game prior to launch and despite owning it, I just haven't got around to picking it up on the Steam Deck yet.

HOLY SHITBALLS that looks amazing. So are we to think those progress meters are correct? If so, then 2025 is no chance right? Most likely next year / maybe 27?

I LOVE a good gzdoom project maybe moreso than most aaa gaming LOL. My best friend and I will get a six pack of beer, plop down on the couch, kick the kids out (sorry, we're going to turn off Bluey, it's time for Daddy and Scorch to violently murder a bunch of pixelated baddies), and stay up way past my bedtime!!! We just take turns on death. It's so much fun! Of course it helps we grew up at JUST the right time for Doom1 / Doom2. I remember trying to figure out what programs I could delete off my mom's 486 running DOS, so that I could free up enough hdd space to have BOTH doom1 and doom2 installed so if my friends wanted to modem deathmatch I could be ready in a heartbeat (MOM! DONT ANSWER THE PHONE OH MY GOD)

ok, sorry, got carried away there. I love a good gzdoom project! And this looks so awesome.

News - DOGWALK is a free casual game from the Blender Studio out now
By Anza, 21 Jul 2025 at 5:50 pm UTC

In the devlogs they are testing with Steamdeck, but haven't watched the few last devlogs yet. Should be somewhat playable at least. Some ProtonDB comments suggest turning shadows to low.

I'm not sure if they plan on still doing some additional fixes or is things up to people who have the game files (available through Steam DLC or Blender Studio subscription).

News - City-building on the back of a giant creature, The Wandering Village 1.0 is out now
By Purple Library Guy, 21 Jul 2025 at 5:31 pm UTC

I liked Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, I found it very impressive in certain ways, but at the same time it was one of the bigger examples of some of Miyazaki's weaknesses. Like, Miyazaki has a tendency to let the story sort of trail off because he's set up a conflict and he either doesn't know how to resolve it or he gets to liking the bad guys and so he just doesn't want to resolve it. A lot of the time I actually find it kind of charming. But in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind it bothered me . . . the issues and mysteries set up were so big and ominous, and then it just kind of didn't deal with them. Just sort of goes shrug, never mind.

Spirited Away is perhaps less ambitious, but it's much more of a complete movie. It's still weird, it still raises some issues (not all that subtly, but I've never really been into subtle anyway), it still has distinctive Miyazaki approaches to characters and things go in some odd directions, and it has perhaps the most gorgeous, rich and strange visuals of any movie I have ever seen--perhaps the fullest flowering of that Miyazaki "look". But all the stuff works together, the strands get pulled together and the movie has a resolution. Every so often I re-watch Spirited Away, just because I want to. I might re-watch Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind someday, but if so it will be less because I really want to and more because I think I should.

@Purple Library Guy

You forgot to name the anime that inspired The Wandering Village in the first place: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

One of our main inspirations for the game is the 1984 anime ‘Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind’ by Hayao Miyazaki. The world of The Wandering Village is heavily inspired by the anime’s setting, a post-apocalyptic world where poisonous plants are spreading and gradually making life on the ground impossible. This adds a survival aspect to the game. The villager and Onbu are dependent on one another and need to find a way out of this mess together.
Taken from an interview on the Masters in Gaming! site.

Spirited Away is probably one of studio Ghibli's most recognized anime in the West. Personally, though, I think that Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind remains one of his best. His manga expands on the story even further. Of course, my first encounter with Miyazaki's works was Princess Mononoke. Unlike Spirited Away or Kiki's Delivery Service, neither of these films are targeted for children.

That being said, I have enjoyed every one of studio Ghibli's anime that I have seen. If you haven't already, you should see them all!

News - According to one source Linux hits over 6% desktop user share
By elmapul, 21 Jul 2025 at 4:13 pm UTC

he is not wrong, many things can go wrong.
for example locked bootloaders like some android devices, proprietary only drivers for many devices, distros with some proprietary software to differentiate thenselves (steamOS main interface is the steam client not the desktop enviroment, i can see some proprietary DE emerging in the future as well from other vendors), and the worst part: so long its good enough for most people, they wont bother to try to have even more freedom.

linux fragmentation is already an issue, we have tons of distros and the easier way to make sure an game will work on all of then now and in the future is actually targeting windows and trying to run the game on wine, most distros care about ensuring wine work "flawless" on their distro because its a very important application (and even then flawless might not be so flawless, it may just mean we havent tested enough to find the issues)
now imagine with either 1 big distro (most likely android, google is killing chromeOS, merging it code to the desktop mode of android, android will be their desktop OS) or a few big ones with proprietary crap being the ones used by 90% of the users or more, we will have tons of apps that wont work on any free (libre) distro, and if we want to play anything recent or have a descente quality of life, we will have to use then.

Yeah, Miyazaki. Not the game itself, just that trailer, has a feel that goes beyond general "anime" style and more into the specific animation style of the studio Ghibli films of Hayao Miyazaki, like "Kiki's Flying Delivery Service" or "Spirited Away" (which are awesome; if you haven't seen Spirited Away, just bloody go and see it). I don't think that's a problem.

Not sure why you think it may replace MangoHud, since MangoHud has always been external open source software. This is just expanding Steam's own built-in options.

Doesn't SteamDeck use MangoHud by default?

DoWII was what brought me to the Warhammer universe. I still like that game. The last I played it a year or two ago, it still suffered from a desync problem when trying to play co-op online.

DoWII is my favorite, I finished that game multiple times. The problem with desync was normal in that game.
