You can play Divinity: Original Sin right now with stable Mesa, and you don't need any patches to mesa to get it running.
This is my point, some sort of hacks are needed. This is one step towards letting it run without manual work.

i think we are growing in steam also, just slower than other OS's, steam userbase is rapidly growing specially the Asian side and this side of the planet sadly doesnt use linux that much afaik. That might explain why we dont see increase in precentage in steamHWSurvey. Also it seems distro hoppers or the ones who sometimes run steam through wine get the survey prompt more often.

If you are going to ask for proof, don't ignore it and provide your own conjecture. It would be nonsensical to capture that information if they weren't recording it.

For the record Windows XP 64bit isn't even listed as a separate line item (it's pretty rare even by XP standards). Changing the Wine Windows version doesn't change the OS recorded in Steam for me (always XP 64bit). It's possible this is buried in the 0.04% Windows other. Or the 0.35% Linux other. Or the 0.14% that isn't assigned to one of the three main OSs.

Regardless, these strings are maybe provided to games via steamworks (never looked at the API myself though).

How can they be taken seriously if they dont fix basic UI glitches?

Just to clarify:
You can play Divinity: Original Sin right now with stable Mesa, and you don't need any patches to mesa to get it running.
All you need is to set the environment variable allow_glsl_extension_directive_midshader=true, and you'll need to LD_PRELOAD the preload-shim linked in the upstream bug report (link.

Step by step guide:
1) Download the source for the LD_PRELOAD shim
2) Compile it using the command given inside the just downloaded patch file. This will give you a divos-hack.so file.
gcc -s -O2 -shared -fPIC -o divos-hack.{so,c} -ldl
3) Copy the just created divos-hack.so file to your Divinity: Original Sin game folder (the subfolder called game, within the install path)
4) now, from said game folder, run Divinity using the following command:
allow_glsl_extension_directive_midshader=true LD_PRELOAD="divos-hack.so" ./runner.sh

Edit:
Thanks, cRaZy-bisCuiT, for bringing this up. The instructions above are for the GoG version of PoE. For Steam multiplayer and overlay support you'll need to preserve Steam's LD_PRELOAD settings when launching the game, meaning that you'll have to run it through Steam. To do this, first create the divos-hack.so file as above, and then go to the preferences of Divinity: OS in your Steam Library (right click on the entry -> Preferences), and open the "Set Launch Options" dialogue. There, put the following:
allow_glsl_extension_directive_midshader=true LD_PRELOAD="divos-hack.so:$LD_PRELOAD" %command%
It might be necessary to give the full path to divos-hack.so for Steam (I haven't tested it, as I bought the game on GoG).

Quoting: [email protected]Steam survey has been proven to be inaccurate.

It has never popped for me and a user on reddit recently reported that it picked up his OpenGL version wrongly (ver 3.0 instead of 4.3) and it even got his disk statistics completely wrong.

The only thing it's good for is for Meraco to quote.
What's more Steam survey can occur on Wine and count you as Windows user (while you actually use Linux OS, but Steam has no information about it because Wine "emulates" Windows under the hood).

So if there would be 5% of Linux gamers but half of it would play for example DOOM on Wine and each user on Steam would see a survey at the same time, we would be 2.5%. That's something that is worth to keep in mind while talking about Steam survey.

Wine users buy and play Windows games. So for game developers they are Windows customers and should be counted as such.

Some devs have noted that their games have been activated on Linux in the past (despite not having a Linux build). Although this might purely be the purchase without install.

However, the Wine version is definitely sent to Steam:

The original 'POSTAL' is now open source under the GPL
By ripper, 8 January 2017 at 8:23 am UTC

Well, it would be better to specify that the engine is opensource, but not the assets. Then it would be clear. If you don't specify it, most people assume it's fully opensource.

And yes, opensource doesn't mean free, but only the first one would need to pay and then could share it for free, so there's not much point in such an approach.

No I don't believe they do unless it's an official OS! (got proof otherwise then let me know)

The Steam survey is indeed inaccurate. But I also suspect the user base is very different and less inclined to game on their machines. You have a very high proportion of very technical users - IT professionals, researchers and so on - and if they game at all they're more likely to do so on a separate home machine; or doing console or mobile gaming.

Myth.

Dungeons don't necessarily have to have better rewards than open-world content. That's one of the things about MMOs I never understood - why do people think all the best stuff needs to drop from scripted boss fights? It's not a law of nature just because WoW did it that way.

QuoteWhat would be interesting to find out is how many active user accounts Steam has now, as last reported in November 2015 it had 125 million active accounts.

Last I saw (probably 12 months ago) the trend was for 1 million new accounts added per month. So perhaps 135 to 140 million?

It's not impossible but very very tedious. I doubt it will ever happen. If you want to do good by the community just don't use wine with Steam distributed titles. This way Valve won't count your desktop as a Windows machine.

People really need to stop even referring to the Steam Hardware Survey as any sort of statistic. It's a survey, and an optional and non-voluntary one at that, about hardware, not operating systems.

Since Pornhub is the only non-tech site listed here, that's obviously the one that most accurately reflects the general public and the one I'll be quoting in the future ;P
