Multiple statistics have shown Linux market-share doing better than ever

My experience is that Steam Surveys pop up more almost every time when I start Steam under WINE, while regularly I don't see them very often.

Steam survey has been proven to be inaccurate.

It has never popped for me and a user on reddit recently reported that it picked up his OpenGL version wrongly (ver 3.0 instead of 4.3) and it even got his disk statistics completely wrong.

The only thing it's good for is for Meraco to quote.

+1.2% for Linux ;)

Wow, is Linux really gaining market share? Except for gamers (according to the steam hardware survey) as it seems :->

I don't believe the Steam stats are truly accurate, I have 3 Linux gaming pcs with Steam on them all and have never seen a single survey in years.

5% on which stat website? Except for W3Schools, 5% looks a bit out of range to me. I would be very happy with 3% on Netmarketshare end 2017.

I have only been using linux for around 9 months so I consider myself part of the Linux 2016 growth figure.

It would be interesting to see how many new linux users are joining GOL as I have been following this site from day 1 to keep an eye on new linux releases.

Learning to use Linux was the best decision I have ever made and wish that I had tried it years ago. I would never go back to windows now and this is all thanks to windows 10 giving me the push to try Linux.

I do believe that by the end of 2017 that we may just reach a 5% marketshare figure, Hopefully.

The websites that do show Linux and ChromeOS separately, show that the ChromeOS share is quite small compared to Linux, so therefore I would not expect ChromeOS to cause the Linux rise on websites that do not show ChromeOS separately.

Is ChromeOS counted as Linux? Might explain why.

QuoteFinally, pornhub (NSFW obviously), a popular porn website has seen a 14% increase in traffic from Linux in the space of a year.

A lot of single Linux users out there :P.

You're right, there's something wrong in the trend statistics.
Yeah, will look into those during the week and get them sorted. Probably a minor bug somewhere.

Rich Geldreich, a former Valve developer, has an interesting blog post about Valve supporting Linux and OpenGL
By Milanium, 7 January 2017 at 7:46 pm UTC

Well, competition is always good and you shouldn't forget that Valve is a lot of ex Microsoft engineering people who are still loyal to their colleagues from the development departments there. It is a bit sad, that they didn't really push further with gaming on Linux and made the press call it a big failure of 2016.

Wine 2.0-rc4 released, fixing 28 bugs to make sure the final release is solid
By finaldest, 7 January 2017 at 6:41 pm UTC Likes: 1

I am pleased to see that wine is making progress, However its easier in most cases to just shut down the PC and swap boot drives and boot into windows 7.

I rarely boot into windows these days but I recently tried wine with doom as I was curious. I did get it to work but it took me nearly 30 mins to set up. Wine has improved alot recently though and I was really pleased with the performance of doom. Doom even worked on my optimus laptop running a 970m with really good frame rates.

Wine could really do with an easy to use GUI to simplify the whole process. Play on linux is ok but its really buggy and fiddly to set up.

Played the demo a couple months ago, definitely going to pick this up :)

My thoughts on the MMO Albion Online on Linux, many months later
By Kimyrielle, 7 January 2017 at 5:56 pm UTC

Thanks for the update, Liam!

While I have no doubt that this game will be fun for some, this still doesn't sound like a game appealing to larger audiences to me. Personally I have never seen a sandbox MMO that didn't bore me to hell inside 5 minutes. The recipe for success in these games is usually joining the largest guild that will have you and dominate the game with numbers. And that's really all there is to them. On top of that you get intellectually challenged 15 year old boys dancing on your corpse yelling "PWNED U, N00B!!!", after they managed to gank your character from behind, while you were collecting crafting mats.

In short, not my idea of fun.

The MMOs that can hold me all have one thing in common - good storytelling and lots of quest content to explore. The really great ones have good crafting and playing housing systems ON TOP of that. But crafting can't really carry a MMO on its own, and guild PvP will lose its appeal quickly once you realize that it's really all about numbers.

Ah, yes, you can "study" made equipment instead of discarding it or selling it. This gives you points towards progression too.

QuoteAlbion Online is a PvP and crafting focused MMO, so everything on the markets and all the gear you get is crafted by either you or someone else.

So what system do they have in place so a new player will be able to actually sell their goods in a market that's bound to be flooded with other low-level crafted material? That was an issue in Wakfu, when I tried playing that.
You don't really need to use the market really, unless you do zero gathering and crafting. I believe the markets are per-town too so each is different.

Not sure that really addresses my concern. Let me re-word it. Say I sign up as a new player and I want to go into crafting. I've got to start with the low level stuff, of course. But so does every other newbie, and experienced players who are starting to craft as well. There's going to be a glut of low-level crafted gear on the market, since that's what everyone makes to begin with. So from a seller's perspective, given there's not really anything at the low levels I can make that dozens of others aren't making at the same time, is there a system in place where I'm not just crafting and essentially throwing it away until I get to a sufficiently high skill level?

In Wakfu that was an issue since it's damn hard to sell the low level gear you make due to the glut and how selling works in the first place. Since they sell Albion on you being able to be a craftsperson or gatherer rather than only a combatant, this is kind of an important consideration.

Quoting: SlipieI hope that one day they will fix the HiDPI issue:
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/3492

Right now everything on the screen is so tiny by default.
I kinda worked around it with this theme https://github.com/MoriTanosuke/HiDPI-Steam-Skin but it makes steam ugly and inconsistent.
Actually one of the apps in a long list that look terrible in HiDPI, I ended up moving back to a 1080p monitor until things can be improved.

Yeah I should have looked into that before I bought a laptop with a 3k screen.

No more keys left BTW.

EDIT: Just launched the demo and I already found proof that Disgaea was always meant to be on linux:

I got the sound problems in the video as well. The video file itself plays fine using external players, so it must be a bug with the game.

Go unigine engine if you can!

Yes the tools require a more learning curve and aren't as EASY as UE4 but they at least produce benchmarks of their engines for platforms so you can know for sure it works under Linux.
