Steam's Autumn sale to begin soon, date also leaked for the Winter sale
By flesk, 21 November 2016 at 3:03 pm UTC

Quoting: tuubiTons of good games on my wishlist so I'll have plenty to choose from. I'll probably have to skip the autumn sale, but I'm hoping to bag Rocket League and/or Mad Max around Christmas. SHENZHEN I/O looks awesome as well.

Shenzhen I/O is indeed awesome.

Quoting: Mountain ManLooks like I'm somewhere between the minimum and recommended specs. It worked out well for Mad Max, so I wonder if I'll be able to eke some good performance out of this one?

You should be more than fine :)

As usual, almost all of my wishlist are games not yet released for Linux. Still, I might go for the Stellaris-expansion, maybe Sword-Coast Legends, Layers of Fear, Dungeon Rushers as well.

Quoting: JahimselfI'm on nvidia, but I applaud Feral for their first release supporting MESA open source driver! It is another great step for linux gaming opened by our beloved cheetah :)

The first Feral game that supported Mesa was also our first game released on Linux! So we've always supported Mesa where possible since the very first game. :)

For the record XCOM 1 (our first release) supported Mesa for Intel GPUs. Total War: Medieval 2, Life Is Strange, Dawn Of War 2 are some recent games that all shipped with Mesa/RadeonSI official support for AMD hardware.

We've supported Mesa where possible and we have a number of titles supported on Mesa and many more that we did all the work needed inside the game but could not support it officially due to the game needing fixes that where not yet available to end users. For example both Mad Max and Deus Ex run on the latest Mesa but had a few driver issues (mainly performance related) preventing official support on launch.

Warhammer is the first complex modern title that we've been able to have Mesa support from launch since games started requiring OpenGL 4 features like compute shaders even on the lowest settings. However it is a long way from being our first Mesa supported title.

If I'm not mistaken it will be their 4th? It depends on how you count the DOW II expansions.

Actually it's not the first time they have supported mesa, see here.

Medieval Total War, Tomb Raider, Life Is Strange and Dawn of War II all officially support Mesa.

Edit: Added in Dawn of War II, as Edwin's post is a little out of date now.

The Vulkan API spec has been updated again, now at its 34th revision since release
By STiAT, 21 November 2016 at 1:29 pm UTC

Quoting: PixelPiBethesda supports with Vulkan Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. I think this is the main reason why we will see a lot of Vulkan developments in the near future. But unfortunately this does not mean automatically Linux ports.

Agreed. Blizzard will do the same for the next iteration for their engine. The good part about this is, that for Wine it's quite straight forward then, so we can expect better performance and less issues with wine ports in future. Of course we want native ports, but hey - let's stay realistic, it would be nice already if we don't have to fiddle around for every game to get it working well and after that still suffering performance issues.

The Vulkan API spec has been updated again, now at its 34th revision since release
By STiAT, 21 November 2016 at 1:23 pm UTC

Quoting: GuestHave to agree that something natively developed from the start is what we should be pushing for. Almost all the people who have so far touted the performance gains from Vulkan have had engines designed with DX11 in mind and tried previously to kludge OpenGL into it.

Actually, that's what engine devs are doing right now with Vulkan as well. They're developing Vulkan below a DX11ish API.

So basically, all engines - and I mean all, being Serious Engine, UE4, Unity etc. are using a DX11 "look-alike" interface, having an implementation in Vulkan below the hood.

I think what we'll see is very much what has been missing the past decade. Engines will build their own graphics API to be developed/scripted from the game development studios, mapping that internally to what ever export target we see out there, providing the maximum performance they can deliver on a certain API / Platform. And we'll see this API to be very DX11ish in the end anyway. Why? Because the game development studios are used to DXish APIs.

Vulkan / DX12 are basically for engine devs to push the performance to the limit. Game development studios will expect something more high level to use.

Much lighter than Deus Ex, given that the latter one works like a charm on my box (and I completed it, while it is sadly too short)

I only have i think 3 games from Itch, but I like them. Who are they, by the way ? I can check the names myself, but still, who are they, beside names ?

I'm ashamed to admit that I've not purchased Deus Ex yet - I simply can't afford it at the moment, things have been very tight now for a few months.
But if it is on sale, then yeah... Either way I'll get it before xmas for sure.

Slime Rancher is also one I'll grab if it's on sale, as well as Warhammer 4k.

I will see... I have completed a few games recently, so it might be time to refill my backlog :)

Total War: Warhammer is number one on the list - though I might want to wait for a sale at Feral store with this one.

"Ultimate General: Gettysburg" - it's very simple to get the mechanics of the game but it's very hard to succeed. I do love the game, I just played it for a few days though so I feel like I'll gift some copies to my friends so we can play together.

If Deus Ex is on sale I might grab it at the Christmas Sale. The needed features for it to run better on AMD are still not implemented so I'm not on a hurry.

Apart from that I wonder if The Dwarfs will already get a bit of discount, maybe like 10 %, for the Christmas sale.

Nvidia beta driver 370.23 has initial support for PRIME Synchronization
By flesk, 21 November 2016 at 10:42 am UTC

I missed this article when it was posted, but I was using bumblebee without issues until I upgraded from Linux Mint 17 KDE to 18 this weekend, and just couldn't get bumblebee to recognize my discrete GPU no matter what I tried. (It's always been a painful experience though, and I've found that the easiest way to upgrade my Nvidia drivers have been to uninstall bumblebee and primus, upgrade Nvidia, and then reinstall bumblebee and primus).

So I installed this driver (or 375.10; I don't remember; I'm at work now) and the nvidia-prime package, and I was kind of blown away by how easy it was to get to work. It's a bummer that there's no render offloading though, as I really enjoyed the convenience of primarily using the integrated card on my laptop and just using primusrun to launch more graphically intensive games. Right now I have to restart my display manager to have the switch take effect, but someone on the Linux Mint IRC channel mentioned that this is a shortcoming of sddm (the default display manager for Plasma 5), and that gdm and lightdm might not have this issue, so I'm thinking I'll give lightdm a try tonight and see if that will improve the experience.

Really hoping render offloading can be officially supported by Nvidia in the near future though, as it would make playing games on Linux laptops much, MUCH more appealing to casual gamers, and I think this is a huge market, even though these gamers might not frequent gaming news sites much.

No crash or rendering errors, but i have only 2 games right now in the system, Dawn Of War 2 with expansion and Rocket League.

It seems that the common denominator is the use of Plasma or a DE that uses Open GL. What is your desktop?

I had no noticeable problems in Rocket League, but Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is completely unplayable.
I also have a very noob-ish question, but what's the best way to roll back the drivers in Antergos?

look in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ for a cached version of your previous drivers. ls nvidia* - then use sudo pacman -U <drivers>
This should be 4 different files, the base driver file then libgl, settings and utils for the version you want to use.

another method is using downgrade or downgrader both use slightly different methods. downgrade generally will give a list. I used the pacman -U method to revert back to 375.10 for now. since this version has worked fine for me.

Its a good game but has some annoying back tracking with the levels at times. I REALLY wish they made a multiplayer DLC were your the team on Nostromo trying to survive, change history [movie], would be awesome sauce x 10!!!
