Quoting: LinasI don't have Broforce, but I have not seen a game that would not work with Steam Controller yet.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator don't detect Steam Controller like a Controller with official driver. It only can be configured like a keyboard, and of course analogical driving is impossible

I believe this is because the Steam Controller only appears as an xinput device (which it's pretty clear about). I had issues with Shelter 2 as well (which turned out to be more trouble getting going than I really thought the game was worth).

Euro truck works great using a mouse and keyboard setup with the steam controller gyro letting it work as a steering wheel though. I just uploaded my (well tested) config to Steam "GeeEl's ETS2 Gyro steering...", give it a go if you're not adverse to touchpad menus. I find I need to occasionally re-align the gyro with where I think the steering wheel should be when driving, I think because I slightly twist the controller when moving occasionally.

A bigger issue I have is the dependence on the steam overlay - which just doesn't seem to work with some games if I start steam via Gnome desktop (rather than my SteamOS box booting straight into BPM).

Steam Machines are dead in the water according to Ars, not quite

SteamOS is still not ready for mainstream consumption. Missing drivers, bad driver optimizations, library file issues, AMD is still largely missing for sysreq on software. And then there is the MAJOR AAA titles still not wanting to port to Linux (where is my Skyrim and Fallout4?).

Maybe some of those issues will be sorted out in the next 12 months I dunno. But Valve KNOWS what must be done to make it successful.

Seems interesting. Thought its not clear on if it can produce UV mapping for you or not. Seems this guy has made the UV maps manually beforehand, which is a pain on complex objects at times.

Definitely going to give this a go with painting a tank sometime in the future, I really wanted to get into using ZBrush but at $800 for a single license and no Linux support.. nope.

I was going to wait until they came out with a 2nd iteration of the Steam controller with improvements, but the 30% discount is quite nice and pushed it low enough for me to consider buying one right now.

I have an old Logitech Rumblepad that I've been using for Grid Autosport, but some games just refuse to recognise it and they weren't games I felt like playing with a keyboard and mouse. Hmmm, will have to get on this.

I wouldn't trust Ars as far as you could throw em, they are an "amusing" read at times, but nothing more than that. SteamOS is still a "beta" it's not a released product (the steam machines are basically the same thing and to sell 500,000 is great imo!). We are on "Valve Time" so this is more about the "long term" than the "short term" gains. It took them years to get to where Steam is now, It will probably take them even longer to push SteamOS and Steam Machines through to where they can actually compete with the PS4 and Xbox One, as was said they (MS/Sony) have 3>4 generations of system to have gained a market. People are looking at the first generation of Steam Machines, Has everyone got the VR headsets yet? nope, yet that is the "next" big thing, is everyone playing games at 4k on their Xboxs or PS4s? nope, both machines aren't even capable of pushing 1440p for the most part, hell they don't even do true FHD at 60fps most the time.

Wait until we see where thing's are going before you announce something as "dead". Linux was in most people's eyes (including the medias) "dead" for a long time, now it's on more devices than any other OS on the market. It took almost 30 years for that change to come about. Valve has had 3 years so far with SteamOS and pushing Linux, give them some time. The playstation has had 20 years, Xbox has had 15 years. Neither of those systems has managed to "take over" as it were and there are still plenty more "PCs" than there are either system.

Patience is a virtue, Valve as a company has more patience with anything they have released than any company in history, Steam has only been around for 12 years yet has changed the face of "gaming" in so many ways already. Digital Distribution (for games atleast) wasn't really a thing before Steam. Now it's everywhere.

I enjoy it and my machine can handle the graphics just fine, depends on specs but if you are on the lower end it might suffer a little graphically. I like getting a group of people I already know to rob banks with otherwise it's odd jumping online to play with a bunch of random people.

The problem with comparing Steam Machines to Xbone and PS4 is that Valve's platform isn't just SteamOS. It's Steam as a whole, and that platform spans multiple operating systems and hardware. It wouldn't be fair to only talk about one Android phone vendor and compare it to Apple's iPhone as a platform when Google is looking at the big Android picture with all the different phones under a single platform. They wouldn't call it a failure because some new Android phone vendor has a small market share. Similarly, Steam as a gaming platform is hugely successful, and its Linux arm is just another extension of it, one that Valve undoubtedly hopes to grow.

I'm willing to be patient to see the big titles land on SteamOS/Linux. But more work on every area of Linux, not just Steam needs improving if you want to see gamers ditching Windows.

I think Valve are actually doing a lot of work behind the scenes on Linux, they're helping with ports where they can and I'm sure they're trying to incentivize other developers into supporting Linux. Maybe it's because we aren't seeing upfront changes that some are getting impatient.

Well, because of it I ditched the Xbox 360 controller.

As a advice if somebody has a game that don't detect it, maybe is caused by having a Xbox controller connected in the computer at same time as the Steam controller, because of this is necessary to disconnect the Xbox controller before starting the game and connect it again after the game launch, with this process the Xbox controller become the secondary and both usable.

Quoting: ZekThePenguinand most PC gamers care about performance above all. (I'm one of the rare few who cares more about comfort and ease of use, but I was a console gamer for many years before coming to PC.)

I think there is also a non-significant portion who are PC gamers for the freedom, myself included. Maybe I have a chronic case of NIH-syndrome but as I've shifted from console to Windows, Windows to Linux I've realized that what I'm really chasing is freedom and total control over my own system.

I do think that Valve needs to aid developers and publishers in porting their games to the GNU/Linux ecosystem. And if they do, it has to be in a timely manner and not like what we have with Rocket League. Promised to have a game and it ready to go and then we don't hear about it until 6+ months later when the buzz has died off.

They should also highlight titles that you can only get on the PC and how you can play the same titles as what is on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Oh and having a handful of units out there made by different developers has confused the consumer. Why can't we have just one machine built by Valve that developers can target?

I do have to wonder what agenda the Ars author is pushing, when you see the "promoted comments" be ones with stuff like "SteamOS is a novelty, nothing more." in it.
