Ooh, ooh, I like this game!
Let’s see… hm… surely we disapprove when there is a genocide happening in the Mediterranean? Let’s block all payments with links to a certain state… while we’re at it: let’s add a certain religion, too. It’s the moral thing to do!
Who’s next? Hmmmmm… oh, I don’t like an orange man living in a white house (the blue man living in a blue house is fine, for now). We shall block any payments with any links to the United States. That shall do it!
It feels so good to fight against immoral and infidel people. It is a moral war… nah… holy war!
Personally, I think: why pay for games anyway??? Just go to the high seas…

I'm starting to feel like somewhere in the mid-layers of one of these outfits, there's some lawyer who received a complaint, looked over some terms and conditions, and decided to issue a cease and desist just to be cautious, or talk to the mid-level lawyers in one of the other organizations and get them to issue it, and none of the PR flacks at any of these places, or the upper level executives for that matter, have a clue what the hell is going on.
Sprawling organizations with too much unaccountable power.

They should do the route of other indie game store like DLsite: supporting every single payment processor whenever possible.
They even have things like Indonesian QRIS or Chinese AliPay. Basically bypassing any American payment system.

This is hilarious because as I understand it MasterCard is now in the "it wasn't us" -- "deny" phase. They are acting like it's not them but they are cowards to not tell the public, if someone gave the order -- who gave the order?
So much damage has been done to their brand. Whoever gave the order must have calculated the cost because the fallout from this may lead to VISA / MasterCard annihilation in the future.
I'm really pleased, the more they try to tighten grip, the closer they bring themselves to their own dissolution.
Black markets are what give a currency its value in their early phases -- their attempt to control & prohibit will only feed the rise of the next beast to take their place.
By ElectricPrism, 1 Aug 2025 at 11:33 pm UTC
(MasterCard used Payment Processors to talk to Valve) (Valve requested direct communication with MasterCard and were declined) (Payment Processors) specifically cited Mastercard’s Rule 5.12.7 and risk to the Mastercard brand.

Imagine if something you like gets banned because some busy-body thinks it "deserves" to be removed. If we allow this to set such a precedent, it is only a matter of time. First they came for the porn games and I did no speak out because I wasn't a gooner. When they came for *my interest* there was no one left to speak out.
You can't legislate (this is even worse - it isn't even legislation!) morallity.
People have different preferences/interests and as long as none of it is deemed illegal, all of it must be allowed.
By eggrole, 1 Aug 2025 at 11:29 pm UTC
Personally I think some of the games that got removed deserved it though, actually, probably most of them.

It is the payment processor, I assume that many people have no clue how this all works since they started to blame VISA and Mastercard for this. To be able to process cards in your store (online or offline) you have to have both an agreement with a card company (VISA, Mastercard and so on) and a payment processor (Klarna, Stripe, Paypal and so on) and it is these last ones that makes lots of demands, at least that is my own experience from having implemented payment solutions as a startup many years ago (they had strict rules against porn, weapons and so on and you had to go through a whole vetting process before they allowed you to use their services).

I still think that Valve (and/or itch and EGS,) should have a channel that just plays trailers on loop, for when players are looking for something new and don't know what. Restream it on Twitch and YouTube with a bot that puts out a link to it, for bonus points. I think it'd be great background viewing, like Salty Bet or whatever.

Yeah, but what other payment networks are out there? Visa and Master Card basically control the market, with Amex not far behind... PayPal, Stripe and most similar services? They still rely on the other payment networks "behind the scenes".
Sure, somebody could setup their own "consumer first" alternative payment network... But an alternative payment network would need to be independent of a financial institution (e.g. a bank) as much as realistically possible, as said financial institution would likely receive pressure from Visa / Master Card / etc to discontinue association with the alternative payment network.
In short, setting up a financial institution (e.g. a bank) is a big task, setting up an alternative payment network would be a herculean task.

they dont have to, the game isnt powered by godot , i mean, the rendering isnt done using godot, nor the physics, audio or multiplayer, just an level editor they made.
never mind, it was not about the game, they riped off godot totally '-'
By elmapul, 1 Aug 2025 at 9:18 pm UTC
Companies always only talking about Open Source using negative words. It very bad they use godot and do not told about this. I known closed-source programs, which use OpenSource and they are a lot, but they only mention about this in license text. Nobody normal reads license, because companies told humans that licenses were only to battle with piracy.

iF sony win this, rockstar can sue sony for using "Humans" style model etc. npc's in their games. XD Then sony will intruduce us so called Reptilians and get sued again because they look like humans in rockstar games.
then prooly we get used to pay 1000$ per game because there arent any cheap clones in any form. Also we have forced to get PSN for playing that copyright protected stuff from Sony.

I understand not wanting to maintain a build for a distro, heck, even Linux as a platform. The part about not needing to care when you aren't being paid, I'm totally behind them on.
But Stenzek appeared quite hostile to allowing anyone else to support Linux. Kind of an "I don't want to support it, and I don't want anyone else to support it either!" type mindset based on the Creative Commons license that DuckStation uses, and the hostility to disallow building on a specific distro (Arch Linux, in this case).
Unofficial packages exist, and they are not upstream's problem. I don't understand why they want to be so hostile here. Users can complain, but as a maintainer, you don't need to care. Heck, you don't even need to tell users where to go to get support. I fully understand the frustration of dealing with end-users. But just focus on developing and supporting what you own. If a user gets a package from a third party they are not your problem, especially if they can't even tell whether they got it from you or not.
For those discussing issue templates: Stenzek has issues disabled on the GitHub repository. It appears to me that bug reports are primarily brought in through some form of Discord Server (where information goes to die, I might add).
Stenzek's prior behaviour has left a poor taste in my mouth with using DuckStation, and this has, too. It is absolutely trying my ability to separate the software from the creator.
