News - Steam Survey for August 2025 is out and here's the Linux / SteamOS details
By Corben, 2 Sep 2025 at 8:09 pm UTC

I was part of the August survey :)
And I did let them count all... desktop PC, VR notebook, old VR notebook, surface pro tablet, old surface pro tablet, LCD deck, OLED deck, rog ally, legion go... so 0.001% has for sure been me! And no, I don't have a problem... that stuff just accumulated over years emoji
Haven't bought new hardware in the last two years. I guess the Legion Go (2023) was the latest aquisition, and that's already 2 years ago.

Unfortunately my VR headset wasn't detected in the survey each time I had it attached. No idea why.

My brains first impression was that Windows 95 had .59 and was up .36% XD

If we look the graphic, even with the drop, it look more like a exponential function. We will have to wait, but 5% in one year would not surprise me.

This looks absolutely amazing. I watched the video first and the first few frames I was like: is this from Piranha Bytes? Damn, I'm excited now!

News - LEGO The Lord of the Rings gets updated and it's now Steam Deck Verified
By Klaas, 2 Sep 2025 at 5:52 pm UTC

I've continued my playthrough two months ago which after a break of two (?) years. I don't remember any issues except that are related to Wine/DXVK.

I'm still not a fan of the “quest system” in free play: It is convoluted and (almost) impossible to finish in a timely manner without constantly checking lists on a wiki. It's a huge contrast to e.g. Lego Jurassic World which was fun to 100 % – if you ignore those two bonus chase sequences that seem impossible without using a score multiplier red brick (which all videos on youtube silently did that I checked to see if I was doing anything wrong while hitting a 80 % score ceiling).

Finally! This is my all time favorite LEGO game, so I'm glad to see it has been updated to work in Linux without requiring janky workarounds.

News - GOG expand one-click mod offerings with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly, RealRTCW, Belzebub (Diablo) and more
By fabertawe, 2 Sep 2025 at 4:55 pm UTC

What a coincidence, I installed Anomaly just a few days ago, just out of interest, and it runs great with Proton (umu-launcher). I mothballed it for now as I'm too involved with Stalker 2 to get into it. I'll dig it out at a later date as I want to add a 2k graphics mod (I was amazed how many mods there are for Anomoly!)

Nice that GOG is doing this, not everyone wants the hassle of configuring things themselves.

By Keksus, 2 Sep 2025 at 3:57 pm UTC

i ... don't get it. I mean ... as said: Anomaly is a standalone game. it was always a one click install basically. So shouldn't it just be added to their free game library instead of mods?

What really needs a one click install would be GAMMA. Especially on Linux it's not as straight forward as it should be and the easiest way to install it is a fan script.

Well. Getting playable framerates with it is an entirely different story though.

Ashes 2063 is also a standalone game nowadays, is it not?

News - The Linux version of the original Splitgate has been removed
By Joom, 2 Sep 2025 at 3:04 pm UTC

unfortunately, linux native packaging requires constant maintaining of apps that rely on external dependencies.
unless it is flatpak or appimage, proton version is better than outdated and borked linux build.

You do know that games installed through Steam don't install external dependencies through the respective package manager, right? They're provided through Steam with the game. It's up to the developer to bundle them, and it'd be no different if they went with Flatpak or AppImage.

Halo:MC remains in the list. I hope some day the fix the issue that Steam Deck (Linux?) can't play co-op with windows.

They did add a special error message to the game, which specifically mentioned the Steam Deck. So, they did that instead of fixing it.

Surprised not to see (yet) some "I was interested but Denuvo" posts.

Yeah, I was interested but Denuvo. I have tons of kart racers on Steam as well as Mario Kart so I think my accounts can vouch for that.

For the time being I'm satiated with the Karters 2 as that game isn't just incredibly fun and highly unique in the genre, but it also has a crazy high skill ceiling. So much practice ahead of me still...

News - ChimeraOS dev announced Kazeta, a new Linux OS aimed at recreating a classic console experience
By emphy, 2 Sep 2025 at 1:40 pm UTC

For collections on a single sdcard one could create menus similar to the blast16 and sneses for the pi, or what the evercade is doing with their cartridges.

Methinks one could also use Kazeta for other software, so you get a multiple-single-purposes machine. Want some distractionless typing? Chuck in wordgrinder. Drawing? Krita, media center? Kodi, and so on.

News - The popular Linux distro CachyOS has a big upgrade and some fun stuff for gamers
By keturidu, 2 Sep 2025 at 1:13 pm UTC

I'll be not popular, but i won't recommend btrfs file system for a new user, despite that CachyOS defaults it. What looks like nice feature (files back up on the fly) becomes a problem when misconfigured or even slower/more complicated to use comparing to traditional file systems.
So i would stay with KDE, xfs or ext4 and Grub. It's more than enough for an average Linux user.

PS: how do i link to external sites? Is this standard bbcode?

News - WinBoat is a new Linux app to run Windows apps with "seamless integration"
By doragasu, 2 Sep 2025 at 12:15 pm UTC

Maybe useful for people that absolutely need to run one or two programs that don't properly work with Wine, but otherwise find Linux fulfilling their needs.

For games (that you usually run without running anything else on the PC excepting maybe things like OBS), I suppose dual booting might be a better solution.

For me, none of those will work since I find the hassle of running Windows just too much, and fortunately I don't need any Windows program not running under Wine/Proton.

What have you been playing across Steam Deck / SteamOS and other Linux systems lately?

Over the last couple of months I've completed The Raven, Sifu and Lacuna (all on the Deck), Detroit: Become Human (streamed from desktop to the Deck), and Control (on the desktop), and played some Dead Cells, Tchia, Jelly Car Worlds, Tempopo, While True: Learn(), Brütal Legend, and En Garde.

This is definitely more my speed.

Swapping the front and back plastic: a little over an hour
Swapping just the back plastic: a little under 5 minutes

Also it looks like they have added a release date on some of the shop links from the video. Amazon US is saying "This item will be released on September 10, 2025", AliExpress has a delivery date of Sep 12-21, and eBay says Estimated between Mon, Sep 15 and Fri, Sep 19. So it looks like it'll be available pretty soon!

Still praying for better virgl support for Windows 10 (and 11) so that we can at least play lighter games on a QEMU/KVM setup. Or perhaps a good, near-universal GPU passthrough setup for single and multi-GPU setups (like that's ever gonna happen).

Sadly, that 3% people were hoping for is another month away, but we'll hit it eventually going by the trends overall.
Now that Valve is heavily invested in Linux gaming, there's no way to ever hit those 3% I fear…
Maybe we'll reach Alyx% though?

Bazzite changed names twice over the past month or so, first "Bazzite 42 (FROM Fedora Kionite/Silverblue" then "Bazzite (FROM Fedora Atomic" and now it's just "Bazzite". Which is the reason why their usage share is tanking right now, but it should stabilize over the next months or so
