GOL Asks: What have you been playing on Linux & SteamOS recently?
23 Nov 2015 at 8:38 pm UTC Likes: 1

Armello, ARK: Survival Evolved, Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth, Left 4 Dead 2, Alien Isolation, and Rust.

Haven't played ARK much since I got annoyed at the graphical bugs, multiplayer limitations, and a fecking skeletal raptor killing all my tamed dinos in two seconds.

Haven't played Alien for a little while either, since I find the mandatory stealth sections almost impossible and infuriating.

Only just started playing Armello again since there was a bug that stopped it running on nvidia drivers for a couple of weeks.

GOL GOTY Awards Coming Up, What Do You Want To See?

I think we should focus on good things. Naming and shaming bad games/developers in a semi-official manner leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

I say keep it simple on the voting system -- one vote per category. It might lead to some stupid strategic voting (I liked X more, but I think Y will win, so I'll vote for Y), but I think it'll make most people really think about who they want to win.

Concluding our first ever Game Jam

As a player, I've had a lot of fun playing these games, I hope the experience has been a positive one for all the developers too. Congratulations to all the participants!

New Linux Gaming Survey For November
3 Nov 2015 at 11:03 pm UTC

I think you do a wonderful job with the surveys, I especially like the new design -- very swave. :D

Filled in. I bought more games than I realized last month, and I've hardly played any of them.

I just realized that I forgot to check a box for Feral's store in the "where did you buy from" question. Bah.

GOL Game Jam Has Entered Rating Phase
28 Oct 2015 at 3:27 pm UTC

Just finished* rating. It's a shame the 12th entry dropped out, but it was still nice to see and play all the others. Very well done to all the participants!

* Not to say I won't make subtle changes as I replay each game

GOL Survey Results: October

The DE question results took another turn for the worse. :P

Openbox, i3 and i3wm should all be merged into none/custom.

Broforce Is Now On Linux, It’s Insane & Totally Hilarious, I’m In Love A Little Bit

Fair play to them, after pushing the Linux release back, they got their finger out and actually did it; which is more than you can say for some companies that pull the same trick. Two days is hardly anything at all. Well done, Free Lives!

My First Hours With A Steam Controller
17 Oct 2015 at 9:30 pm UTC Likes: 1

I struggled to update the firmware on my controller (for some reason it was shipped with a really buggy firmware that made the right control pad unusable), but once I got that fixed, I've been having a lot of fun with it. Only really played Borderlands 2 and L4D2 so far, and of those, only Borderlands had an official controller scheme (really Valve, L4D has one, but L4D2 doesn't, what sort of half-arsed job is that?). Also tried Armello, which is advertised as being fully controller compatible, but isn't compatible at all (can't even navigate the menus without a mouse).

Big Picture Mode also seems to be quite buggy (friends list won't close after inviting someone in Borderlands, after closing a game it often becomes really unresponsive, initiating/accepting a voice chat request doesn't seem to work half the time), so I think that there needs to be a bit more work there.

So all in all, I'm quite happy with my controller, but Valve have a lot of niggles to iron out before the launch proper.

Several Sites Publish Their Thoughts On Steam Machines & The Steam Controller

In other Steam hardware news, the early pre-order units have shipped and should be arriving in the next couple of days.

I got this email this afternoon:
The first Steam Link and Steam Controller pre-order units are scheduled to arrive over the next few days.

We're eager to hear your feedback as we continue to make changes and improvements leading up to the full retail launch on November 10th. For the next few weeks, we recommend that you opt in to the Steam client beta (through the System settings panel in the Big Picture UI) so that you'll be running the most current fixes and functionality.

We'll be keeping an eye on forums everywhere, but we've also set up a contact email address for everyone on the team: [email protected]. Whether you're having a great time or running into issues, we want to know.

Thank you
It's nice to see that they're actively seeking feedback. They're not just shoving out a product and moving on.

Testers Needed For 'Quasar' An Online Bullet Hell Space Shooter, Linux To Be A First Class Citizen Here

<Red Dwarf reference />

That's a refreshing developer attitude. They just won themselves a sale (assuming the testing goes well).
