Baldur's Gate 3 gets a Native Linux version to improve it on Steam Deck

For all other Linux systems from PCs to different handhelds, you'll want to stick with Proton.
That's not really the take away. You can run the native build, but you shouldn't expect support. They aren't supporting running the Windows version through Proton, either.

!!! But be careful, Steam must not already be running for this to work. If this is the case, you must first exit Steam, then restart it by double-clicking on the game icon !!!
You should be able to have taskset -c 0,1,2,3 %command% as the game's launch options in its Properties to have it apply just for that game.

However, porting a game to Linux comes at a cost and unfortunately some publishers, only thinking about profits, give up on offering us native games under Linux to increase their profit margins which are already extremely high ;-(

The reason I buy native Linux games at full price but only buy Windows games at a steep discount is to pay for that support. My one wallet won't make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things, but it is putting my money where my mouth is.

FWIW, the introduction of Proton didn't decrease the proportion of games on Steam that have native builds - that was on the decline since the failure of the Steam Machines. It did kill the third-party porting market, though. The thing that will bring the proportion back up is a bigger more lucrative market, so developers won't want to risk offloading support of their game to Valve.

I guess there's a workaround for this restriction, for the time the native version is ready?
Probably steamdeck=1.

However, it seems like the developer Larian Studios are working on a Native Linux version specifically for the Steam Deck, which you can see in the depots on SteamDB with a Native Linux version set for Steam Deck only (if a depot is set for Steam Deck it's not available on Desktop Linux).
It's a shame they've chosen to do that. The desktop Linux market is significantly bigger than the Deck market.

Anyone of those interesting to GamingOnLinux readers?
Hyperyuki could be good if it runs well on the Deck. They're going to need to avoid the stutter that's plagued so many recent games if they want it to feel good.

or remove those eye sore subtitles like "Platinum Edition", instead of it being just for sorting.
And sort out those that are displayed in stupid allcaps, or filled with obnoxious ™ symbols.

The free unusual extreme speed shooter Ecto added Linux support

Ecto is a highly-randomized nature world, featuring smooth, addictive movement. Jump around on colorful, nature-inspired floating islands with your friends or solo. Pick up trinkets, buy and upgrade stick guns, hang out with frogs and fight robots in the underworld.
That sounds like exactly the little one's cup of tea.

Wheel World adds a Native Linux version for Steam Deck with a "significant performance improvement"

Valve even rated it Steam Deck Verified with Proton, so hopefully this Native Linux version really is even better as they describe.
The devs could do with contacting Valve for a re-test so that Deck users get the native version.

The Lenovo Legion Go 2 launches in October - it's heavier and very pricey

2.02 pounds
That's 916 g. Which is quite a lot. The Deck OLED is 640 g, for comparison.

8.8" WUXGA (1920×1200) OLED
That's something I'd be interested in for the Deck 2 - assuming the performance to drive that resolution is there by then. Text legibility has been an issue for some games on the Deck, and game devs often don't test their games at resolutions lower than 1080p.

The lack of trackpads on this machine is a major disadvantage when it comes to playing PC games. Does it even have gyro? The detachable controllers are a silly gimmick and the layout of the controls is stupid.

Having USB sockets both top and bottom probably gives some flexibility for use cases without having to be docked.
