Star Wars Dark Forces source port The Force Engine adds Linux support
7 Feb 2023 at 5:11 pm UTC

Quoting: KlaasI've looked through my Steam purchase history and I bought the Steam version of Dark Forces on 1 Jan 2011 in preparation of the then soon to be released first engine recreation by the same author. Then feature creep happened, then life happened and the massive engine was abandoned. I'm very happy that we finally have a real release.

Congratulations, Lucius.
Yep, only a flatpak or a snap package for easy installation for everyone remains  We're not in the Linux of the 90s anymore!

OK i can see many struggle these "simple standard" things but there seems to be progress. The dev initially didn't even provide any instructions https://github.com/luciusDXL/TheForceEngine/issues/231 [External Link]

Currently it seems Linux users need to build it from source and the actual build instructions aren't in the readme
It's a cmake project, so it's kinda straight forward:

First install dependencies (Ubuntu like distro it would be sudo apt install build-essential cmake libglew-dev libsdl2-dev libglew-dev librtmidi-dev libdevil-dev librtaudio-dev)

Clone the repo, create a build dir and run cmake/make.

git clone https://github.com/luciusDXL/TheForceEngine.git
cd TheForceEngine
mkdir build
cd build
cmake ..
make
Excuse me for not being a Linux guru and stuff, but how is the regular downloader supposed to know all this right off the bat? Windows folk get a clickable exe right?

Also if someone would put it into Snap Store as a Snap for Ubuntu, ZorinOS, KDE Neon, Solus, etc users (where snapd is installed by default).

elementary OS 7 'Horus' is out now with major AppCenter upgrades

Really looking good! I've always been impressed by the design of elementary OS 7.
And that is basically all it has to offer, the rest is unusable meh, not suited for anyone.
No wonder it has a score of 6.6/10 in distrowatch.

According to the Founder and CEO, Danielle Foré
I thought Cassidy James was the founder and that they had hired Fore few years later? https://cassidyjames.com/blog/farewell-elementary/ [External Link]
This was my experience too: when i wanted to do something out of their 'curated box' i pretty much had to break the design and there was warning messages when installing even very established Linux softwares like VLC.

No Wayland still? eOS 7 has been waited for many years and it was way over due. I wanted to check this out as its released but looks like theres like nothing much new? elementary is Ubuntu underneath after all though, but what makes this more convenient than Ubuntu?

Yes Cassidy James is the founder and not Foré.

Quoting: KramyugtahtBut it's free rn so there is no money being sent anywhere....?
That's the point: i like to pay Valve and Steam even 3 times for same shit, just because they TRULY advance Linux gaming. I do understand though, that this is kind of an alternative way. I don't want to "support" Epig nor GOG in any way, until they start to support Linux as first class citizen.

Quoting: dziadulewiczNo thanks; i rather send my monys to Steam because they have a native Linux client and support Linux in other ways too. Epig (typed correctly) and GOG are out of the question for me until they support Linux in a sound way. Yes.
GOG has Linux games, just not a Linux client. And the vast majority of Steam games rely on Proton (Valve's Wine fork) to run, so I don't understand what you're complaining about.
Naw naw, not complaining really. This is a choice. Steam has Linux native client and Valve advances Linux gaming. Maybe GOG and Epig change next year. Steam Deck is a massive success and so on. But you do you, i do me. Peace
