Thanks!
Quoting: EikeBut, to be honest: If you're not playing in the first place, do you thing Steam Deck will change that? That's a good question. I've read a fair number of comments and reviews from people saying that being able to just pick up the Steam Deck and play a game, rather than sitting down at a full-on desktop PC, somehow made it easier for them to find time to play. I'm also wondering if having the extra device will mean I can more easily play multiplayer games with friends/family at home. But I'm also not sure, which is one reason why I'm thinking of the (relatively) low-end LCD model (if I get one at all) rather than splashing out on the OLED.

I'm tempted to get the LCD model with the 20% discount, to try out the concept of a Steam Deck without spending too much. This is because I don't know if I'll really have any time to play (I've barely gamed at all in the last few years, even after buying games I was really keen to play). My main concern is fan noise, and disturbing people in the same room. Do the current LCD models have the quieter fan, or is it still random whether I'll get a noisy one? And is the OLED model any quieter, apart from all the other improved features?

For Horizon Zero Dawn, on the Steam page it says "Requires agreement to a 3rd-party EULA: Horizon Zero Dawn EULA". How big of a downside is that? I'd been staying away from HZD because I didn't want anything like Denuvo DRM. However, I notice that that's listed separately on other games, e.g. Prince of Persia The Lost Crown explicitly says "Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Denuvo Anti-Tamper" and "Requires 3rd-Party Account: Ubisoft Account (Supports Linking to Steam Account)". I guess this means HZD doesn't have that.
I know I definitely want to avoid anything with 3rd-party DRM such as Denuvo, or anything rootkit-like, but what are the downsides of either "Requires agreement to a 3rd-party EULA" (for HZD for example) or "Requires 3rd-Party Account"? Are they technical/security/performance problems (especially in Proton), or is it 'just' the inconvenience of having an extra EULA or an extra account to set up?

Quoting: scaineMy Sapphire 5700XT is super quiet. I have my PC sitting under the desk and it's barely audible. The fans on the Sapphire don't spin at idle at all - 0rpm. If I play a demanding game, they'll spin up around 1200rpm - audible, but certainly not over the game sounds.Thank you very much! That's what I went with in the end, and it is working well (and quietly) for me too.

If this comment should go in a different thread as it's not VR-related, please let me know!
How well is the Elite:Dangerous launcher expected to run through Proton at the moment, and how important is the launcher anyway? I've seen comments that the launcher doesn't work well with Proton 5.13 but I'm not sure if that advice is still up-to-date, especially given jens' comment above.
I'm using Proton 5.13-2 and followed the "with protontricks" instructions on https://github.com/redmcg/wine-mono/wiki#with-protontricks [External Link] and wine-mono-5.1.1.2_ED-x86.msi. The game itself seems to run well.
However, the launcher doesn't work for anything other than starting the game. Is that normal, and is it a problem, i.e. are there any tasks that I need to do via the launcher (setting up a Commander?) or can it all be done in-game? As I've not played the game before, and the game started automatically in the training tutorials, I can't tell whether there's some functionality missing or whether things like setting up a Commander name happen only after the tutorials are successfully completed.
I think I managed to create a Frontier account and log in using the launcher when I first used it. My email address appears in red in the top-right of the launcher window. Is that how it's supposed to be? I can click on "Play (Elite Dangerous: Horizons)" in the bottom left, and the game runs and puts me in the tutorial mode. Most of the rest of the launcher doesn't work though, for example:
In case it makes a difference, I bought the game in Steam, and am running it on Ubuntu 20.10, with the Steam client from the Ubuntu Software Center and Proton 5.13-2. I followed the "with protontricks" instructions on https://github.com/redmcg/wine-mono/wiki#with-protontricks [External Link] and wine-mono-5.1.1.2_ED-x86.msi. For step 1 where it says "click 'Play' and let the game launch and fail" the installer seemed to hang at the end rather than explicitly give an error, so I closed it and continued with step 2.

Quoting: slaapliedjeIf you're planning on Elite in VR, wait and get either a 3080 or a 6800 XT. I have a 2080, and it's playable in Windows, but gets ~100 fps less in Linux/Proton. And while it still runs ~190fps outside in space, inside stations you'll yack as the framerate drops a whole lot! I'm hoping if I get either a 3080 or 6800xt (haven't decided yet) I can finally play Elite: Dangerous in Linux. Thanks for the suggestions! I'll think about it, although those cards might be beyond my budget and I was also hoping to get this set up before Christmas, so availability might be a problem. Besides, I got the impression from scaine and at least one other person in the comments on this article that the 5700XT performance for Elite in VR was pretty good?

Quoting: scaineMy Sapphire 5700XT is super quiet.Thank you very much! May I please ask which Sapphire model that is? I've seen the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5700 XT (as well as the Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 5700 XT BE version), as well as the Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 5700 XT (also in ... BE and ... SE versions, it seems).

I'm planning a new build, where I won't be starting with VR immediately but would like to keep open the option of getting a VR setup (probably a Valve Index) to play Elite: Dangerous in the future. I noticed that scaine and others have RX 5700 XTs. Could I please ask which specific cards you have, whether you're happy with them, how quiet they are, or if anyone has any other recommendations for good GPUs for a setup like this? I've seen lots of discussion about RX 5700 XTs having an abnormally high idle power consumption (example [External Link] ). Has anyone else run into this?
