Steam Next Fest - June 2024 edition is live with lots and lots of demos

I quite like WoL2, after 10 years of the unsurpassable co-op -classic now- Gauntlet (endless mode in particular), done by no others than the masters of co-op, Arrowhead (Magicka, Helldivers), this one seems really worth it for co-op (solo is also fine), particulary for it's fast (Gauntlet's Merlin) gameplay. It has spawners like in Gauntlet and borrows mechanics and enemies from Dead Mage's other game, Children of Morta, a nice flow, perfect effects and animations.

Manjaro 24.0 released with KDE Plasma 6, GNOME 46, Linux kernel 6.9

Running systemd-boot for years and never had a problem, plus its configuration is so simple. Running (the often problematic in the past) GRUB in 2024 makes no sense to me (except you have an old motherboard), when for years most (common) distros use systemd, and you can switch from it to systemd-boot easily.

Quoting: Ali_JohnKDE 6 is the same, all the manjaro kernel or mhwd settings are not in system settings anymore which is annoying.
Typical Manjaro amateurs with KDE a 2nd-class citizen there, see also Pamac GUI based on GTK4 for... KDE, it should be dropped from the list of recommended distros by KDE for the 2nd time. https://invent.kde.org/nmariusp/kde-org/-/commit/45c7cd58f85ba3e34f52b12755bb7d387b2c1d87 [External Link]

If only they would be so determined about the kernel rootkit as well...

HELLDIVERS 2 sees over 130K bad reviews on Steam as Sony double down

and clearly the team at Arrowhead are rather unhappy about it too
Are they? There's a thread on reddit showing how another community manager was pretty happy about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/Helldivers/comments/1cjvw1s/arrowhead_community_manager_misty_admits_that_the/ [External Link]

I think it's the typical good cop + bad cop PR for damage control and effectively going through their common decision, or a public stunt to increase the game's exposure even more and then stepping down by making the mandatory requirement "optional" again, followed by comments of the type "Thank you AH and Sony for listening to your fans, I'm going to buy 4 more copies now because you guys rock".

Valve makes paid 'Advanced Access' a clear feature on Steam now
29 Apr 2024 at 4:59 pm UTC

Haven't read all the details but from the little I've read I think it's a good idea that fills the gap for the developers/publishers that don't want to develop from scratch in Early Access (out of secrecy for their project) but would rather do a beta test on Steam, which is not allowed on Steam if you don't go the EA route. Helldivers 2 comes to mind as the best example, it was multi-platform and it couldn't be tested properly with the vast amount of Steam users. Advanced Access would benefit both the dev (real test) and the consumer (don't buy 'til it's fixed) in this case.

Embracer Group splitting into three companies

LOL @PR bs...
-buy companies, merge into one = benefit
-split companies into many = benefit

"with Embracer you always benefit!"

everything done just with the intent of how to artificially boost/play around shareholders investment.

XZ tools and libraries compromised with a critical issue

Quoting: dpanterI don't want to argue about off topic issues in article comments but what the heck have you been smoking and where can I get some? Come on dude. Nobody here likes M$ or Windoze but let's stick with facts.
Maybe you should put down the controller for a moment instead lol. What exactly isn't a fact, that MS-DOS was not single-user, that it wasn't single-tasking or that it wasn't network-aware? Also, it wasn't me using Windows 95 as an invalid argument.

XZ tools and libraries compromised with a critical issue

Citation needed. And I would suspect that Stallman and Torvalds both would have objection to the statement that the GNU/Linux ecosystem is mainly for server use.

Quoting: sudoerSeeing all that, FreeBSD and Haiku make more sense.
I've tried to use FreeBSD as a daily desktop driver, and it utterly fails to embrace the advances that desktop Linux has pushed over the last decade. As a server OS it is fantastic at what it does, though, provided the applications you want to use are available.

What does this have to do with the XZ tools issue? Nothing. FreeBSD used the same code as everyone else, and had to do the same audits to determine whether it affected them or not.
Torvalds cares only for the kernel. You can find many citations easily. And having 15 (15* as a figure of speech) different compression methods to choose from, instead of one that would be properly maintained by a core team and others, as with many many other subsystems, compilers, musl vs. glibc, 15 different bootloaders, 15 different init-systems, 15 different package-managers, non FHS-respecting systems like NixOS, a dead LSB (Linux Standard Base) attempt, are not exactly what one would call "non-chaotic".

Have you looked into the kernel lately (decades)? The stuff that goes there every month is not for your PC or mine. 99% of servers worldwide are running Linux and our PCs on x86-64 with some petty CPU/GPU/RAM for office applications, multimedia and games are 2-3% of the total PC market.
