From the average game consumer perspective, I'd hardly have realized there was any release. It was mentioned in the (paper) PC games magazine I'm reading (Gamestar) in a short news messsage, along with a one page rant why it won't be successful. The Steam Controller had more coverage, while the Steam Link to my surprise had about none at release.

I'm having a similiar problem at the moment: I tried to find a TV that only displays what is send to it, without NFC, USB, EPG, three receivers, Ethernet, WiFi, recording, timeshift, internet, HbbTV, apps, "Smart". I gave up.

You will have performance hits. For some games it won't matter, like if it's 120 fps or 100 fps, for others it probably will, to be honest.

Distributions are always a matter of personal taste - and endless discussions. :)
But you can try out many of them using live DVDs.
