Blocking Linux / Steam Deck in Apex Legends led to a 'meaningful reduction' in cheaters

Game developer: look we changed two things

Conclusion?

One of the two things did something.

For example if I were to develop some cheat I'd be hooking into functions, change some values and call it a day. Now the game changed, I need to figure out what changed and then update my cheat... this means I can now cheat again but the masses (everyone else who wants to cheat using my cheats) needs to wait until I release a new version.

Looking at a single week is meaningless, as you can see cheating was already on the rise the next week!

Besides that, if you wanted to compare numbers you would have added a metric for Windows version and you would have called wine_get_version on ntdll to check how many Linux users were actually in those "infected" lobbies.

Yes, I could make my own WINE build without that version check but even then it is trivial to figure out if you are running on WINE or Windows (like DWM missing in the process list and other Windows services)!

So, no. Fix your game, don't blame others for your lack of proper telemetry to understand what your own numbers mean.

Also, as a trust me bro... because... I know:

99% of cheaters are on the Windows platform.

Riot Games talk Vanguard anti-cheat for League of Legends and why it's a no for Linux

Just imagine, they have 800 active Linux players (including me) and now we are all branded cheaters.

Just because the one percent of cheaters matches our numbers does not mean we are cheaters.

This kernel level anti cheat is easily defeated on the Windows platform as well, you can just load an EFI driver before the OS starts and your security attestation is defeated.

You Riot, like other companies, don't want the end user to own the computer you game on. You just want control, because it gives you a false sense of security.

This bozo was just chanting nonsense that came from Tim Sweeney, these companies just do not care.

For example I play GTA Online, which is riddled with cheaters. Out of all the cheaters in that game that I know, not a single one is on the Linux platform like myself. Not a single one, even worse... not a single one of them is able to compile anything.

So yes, we developers LOVE reading through code. That does not make us bad agents. This is modern day discrimination!

Besides, once this whole KMAC is deployed and cheaters eventually show up left and right on the Windows platform... There is not a Tim Sweeney in the world that will go back and say, damn this guy was right and we fubarred Linux gamers for no good reason at all. Nobody will reflect like that these days anymore.

Ubisoft just broke their games on Linux desktop and Steam Deck

Are you also going to write an article everytime Blizzard breaks their launcher?

Currently the launcher simply doesn't start if you don't install the Tahoma font and doing so leads to a peculiar bug that Windows users already had to deal with for a long time...

Everytime my character now flaps on its mount, the nameplate increases in size... same happens when people jump.

This never happened with the fallback font...

Sorry, I'm that one user testament of it working :)

You understand there are more Linux users than the Steam Deck users?

I for one would like to be able to play Fallout Guys and Fortnite again without resorting to GeForce Now... altho some games run better in the cloud than my own machine.

Sadly, I'm getting nothing but repeated crashes using 1.9.1 with World of Warcraft!
