ID Software Moving Further Away From Linux, QuakeLive Going Native
11 Nov 2013 at 10:27 am UTC

Quoting: Quote from HolgerThis is a sad move by ID Software but understandable. Compared to Windows both the Linux and MacOS user base is quite small but since Linux as platform is very fragmented (different drivers, kernels, desktop environments, etc), it is very likely to cause imense support effort. Period.
I'm a bit tired of this FUD. Just one man was supporting ID titles on GNU/Linux and they worked really well, period. Indie developers are doing it without that much effort. Windows or Android are much more fragmented and often even broken and still supported by most publishers.

Quoting: Quote from HolgerWe are talking about Q3 here folks. Something that runs / has been ported to pretty much any system you can think of. Even my Raspi is able to run Q3A.
No immense support effort.

Correctly supporting a game has a cost on every platform, saying is harder on GNU/Linux than other systems without an evidence is FUD. Maybe it isn't profitable because the number of users is currently very low, but it's not because of technical deficiencies.

Quoting: Quote from philip550cHas he ever said he is for directX? I have only ever heard him talk about how he likes opengl.
Well there was time ( while developing Rage I think ) when John said they would use DX but changing all in house software would need to much time & money.
I think it was on Twitter that he was praising DirectX11 around that time IIRC.

Quoting: Quote from nullptrAs mentioned: It's not id Software, it's their new owners. Apparently the management at Zenimax has something against Linux and OS X -- they're the ones who blocked a Rage port, and although John Carmack is obligated to not publicly criticize his employer, he has given some strong hints about what he thinks of the company.

So don't blame him for cutting off Linux. Blame him for selling to Zenimax, the rotting skin suit of a video game studio wrapped around a private equity firm, run by an ex-banker who plea bargained his way out of eight felony insider trading charges.
In his defence, at the time they probably didn't seem quite as bad as the alternatives (Activision or EA or Ubi); they did at that point assent to the release of id Tech 4. It's only been in the last few years (and especially with Skyrim and beyond) that Zenimax has become much more like them.
It's just not selling ID, it's like he's sold his soul too. Maybe it's more healthy for his bank account but we miss the old John Carmack, the indie developer.

Naw. He's just gone completely batty.
I feel like Hamish. Maybe it's just that he's moved on from what he enjoyed in the past. I remember reading he was all for multi-platform programming since it would make code much better and better tested, now it seems he's a Windows/DirectX sales rep.

If anyone is interested in his opinion of the steam machine and steamos that can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MH2hjhcfWic&t=29m49s [External Link] also if you notice the guy on the left mentions linux being the number one consumer operating system in terms of sales month to month and John nods his head in agreement. So we will see what really happens when steamos starts taking off. I bet they will port the games then.
I'm sure everyone will port their games when there's lots of money to reap. In the past, he didn't seem so much after the money, instead he took pride on the technical merits of having their games running on different platforms even when it didn't earn him any. I'm more and more aware that he's were the money is.

It feels like that pragmatic approach to game development has been replaced by some company's greed.

Anyway, ID's best legacy is the engine source releases above everything else. They've done a lot more for open source gaming than almost any other company.

Quoting: Quote from berarmaReally interesting, I'd like to play it, we lack this kind of game. I've asked them about buying this game DRM-free, Steam-free.
really? have you missed out on war thunder, for example.
and if steam is such a big problem for ya, war thunder does not require steam, it is free and pretty well built and runs awesome with wine. (i've heard talk about a future native linux build... but i have no useful info on that)
I don't like to play games with Wine, that's not fair support. I must be getting old and tired of stupid software. Thanks for the notice though, I'll wait for the native version.

Quoting: Quote from ShmerlThey answered about DRM free Linux version:

Quoting: QuoteRed Baron will be available on our website www.redbarongame.com [External Link], DRM free, with Linux support (as well as SteamOS and Windows).

Yes, I didn't know. I received the answer in my email too. This might be the first kickstarter I'm in.

Oil Rush is the only Unigine game I know, are there others?

And relying on Steam is better than that? There's others engines, I wouldn't worry a bit about Unity3D dropping GNU/Linux support. We wouldn't see so many games but it wouldn't be the end of anything.
That doesn't sound scary at all, if you want to sound scary tell us about Steam goodies. :-)

I wish you the best. You're a very talented and wonderful individual and we love your work, but your health is first. I hope you come back some day to what you like the most, when you're fully recovered and have the strength. I truly admire your talent and will to release games working on your own, multi-platform, all while having a side job.
