As reported in the forums there most likely is an OpenGl issue in the UI-Elements which is responsible for at least some of the performance issues. Try to hide the UI with ctrl+alt+U and see if it effects your performance. They are working to solve this issue.

Stardock replied a few months ago on the steam forum, that there current games won't come to linux, but they'll build future engines with linux in mind.

As a linux-only user I love GOL as a daily source of up-to-date high quality information about games I can play on linux.
Aspyr is a great, because they are doing fast and very good ports of great games. Additional to that they are very good at communicating with the community about their ports and progress.
