A Unity developer is teasing the Vulkan API in the Unity engine
14 Sep 2016 at 2:20 am UTC

am i the only one who thinks that work on SDL is far better news than Vulkan news. Controllers in Unity games were flaky at best while OpenGL did its job with much less noticeable downside

Things I feel Valve need to address to help SteamOS really be something fantastic

> Web Apps

ffs, i hear my head screaming "anything but this. web apps are fucking cpu/memory eating disgrace made by lazy people. and normal apps are just as easy portable as web apps if done correctly"

sadly, world seems to turn the wrong way and they are unavoidable

You show two screenshots of the difference between TreeFX and non-TreeFX. But you didn't say which one was which :-).

Which has TreeFX enabled, left or right?
TressFX is all about hair and only about hair. now try figuring out. unless you're blind, it should be obvious
Ah okay thanks. I was looking for facial details or something, I didn't even think about hair!

Tbh is the way hair looks really that important to people?
if you ever tried playing Alice: Madness returns you'd see how much it means. But hair effects in Alice were far better than TressFX in Tomb Raider since they were combined with full range of effects on her dress and movements. when game only employs singular effect it really has no real impact.

watch how her dress and hair just make game alive. fun fact about it, they had to lower the effects down in Alice so they only consume a bit more utilization than half of the game.

Quoting: KeyrockPersonally, I thought Lara's "growth" in the game was hilariously shallow and sudden. She goes from struggling with having killed a person (which was a nice show of emotion) to murdering a dozen Russians five minutes later and not even batting an eyelash. Welp, she got over that quick.
Anniversary handled that first kill much better when you kill Larson. you let him go the first time, the second time when that softness bites Lara in her ass she has some really good lines

killing some random first dudes and then crying for about 5 seconds here was more or less terrible plot. Anniversary brings that tipping point where she stops being soft really well

Testing The Talos Principle OpenGL vs Vulkan again, now that Valve have fixed the Steam Overlay

Quoting: ThePierrasseWow Vulkan is just murdering OpenGL
While this is all nice for one particular game, and I'm sure there will be performance benefits across the board anyway, it's a bit early for such a generalised statement. Especially when the OpenGL version is of such importance. At least on my rig, Talos is using GL3.0, GLSL 130. Modern OpenGL (i.e GL4.5) would allow much greater performance improvements.

Again though, that they have something nicer with Vulkan is good. Just don't expect it everywhere.
nope, it wouldn't for 3 reasons

1. only NVidia implements it well. just try looking trough all the threads where developers tried AZDO. and then there is the problem where Apple is at old GL and to make it worse, their GL is terrible which is what forces developers to go with older one
2. AZDO < Vulkan since it only covers part of functionality in Vulkan
3. AZDO is even harder to grasp/write than Vulkan

face it, GL problems will never be fixed since most vendors focused on Vulkan

Gorky 17, another classic Topware published title now in beta for Linux, uses Wine

Quoting: LinasI have mixed feelings about Wine ports. On one hand it's nice to see these games on Linux, but then I think, you could already run them in Wine, so it's not like they have done anything I couldn't have done myself.
it is still some work to integrate it with Linux client and desktop. at least VP games are like night and day compared to running them in wine

which makes me remember. what is with VP and the upcoming titles? overlord1&2, saints row2

CryEngine V released, Crytek now offer CryEngine as "pay what you want", source code access too
21 Mar 2016 at 3:47 am UTC

Quoting: Kristian"- C#"

Can't you develop using C# in both UE4 and CryEngine V. Certainly you can in the latter. Plus UE4 has the Blueprint system.

"- Assets"

As far as I can tell there are lots of assets for UE4 and CryEngine V.

"- You don't really have to care about the build-system etc. Everything's GUI"

Is this different with CryEngine V and UE4? Do you have to care about the build system with those?
you can't develop UE4 in C#. unless you want to stay on 4.2 forever. Xamarin completely abandoned it when they realized they can't pull Unity (read up how Unity is stuck on stone age version of Mono and why) due to licensing restrictions of UE4 which prevents that. i think it wasn't 1 month when everything was forgotten it ever existed

there was also another project aiming for C# in UE4, but Ximian practically gave them cease and desist answer with the pricing for required licensing if they went forward

Mono it self is free, but you're not allowed to bundle it with application. you can freely distribute application and require user installs Mono, but for inclusion in your setup you need commercial license.

Quoting: cRaZy-bisCuiTI guess it's Tomb Raider. Still I do wonder why they port the old game instead of the latest title. What's the idea of porting older games, when you could also port recent ones?
The idea of porting older games is to play them right out the box on Linux without the need of using tricks like playonlinux or something like that... I know they use the wrapper method, but is not the same than install wine on linux, then install steam inside wine and then, install the game inside steam inside wine.. We can not wrap games by ourselves like they can.

In other way, it will be cool if Valve include an official compatibility layer for Steam OS...
"This game is not available for Steam OS, would you like to activate the Steam OS Compatibility Layer Mode for this game?"

Disclaimer: To run this game under the compatibility layer mode is NOT officially supported by the developers or the publisher . Use it at Your own risk."
and if that ever happened, all developers would simply stick this label to every game and forget about doing linux release.
