Developer of PlayStation 1 emulator DuckStation threatens "removing Linux support entirely" but not yet

Stenzek is a very talented developer whose work I really, really appreciate. But he does have a penchant for drama, which has led him to some unpleasant places (see: the extremely bizarre licensing situation, which has only made things more complex for honest users and package maintainers).

The problem isn't Linux or package maintainers. It's users who don't care to figure out where to file their issues. In my experience, the vast amount of open source users are well behaved and understanding. Unfortunately, this is often *not* the case with gaming OSS projects unfortunately. My guess is that's because they can often attract an audience of very young people who are less familiar with software development. And a large influx of those people may be first time Linux users on the Deck.

Even though I've disagreed with Stenzek in the past and I think he's directing his anger towards the wrong people, I do understand his frustration on this issue. He's doing a thankless job, and getting swamped with spam from clueless users instead of users posting helpful reports or asking the right people is very difficult to deal with. That makes his tough job even harder, and I get that.

Perhaps someone can chip and think of some solution to help the man out a little.

PlayStation 1 emulator DuckStation changes license for no commercial use and no derivatives

Quoting: DrNickWith the heat surrounding emulation lately it's understandable that the devs would want to cover themselves.
Sure, but I don't see how this offers any protections whatsoever, and it's also not necessary because the DuckStation approach is reliably legal, and Sony hasn't sued anyone since Bleem.

Once again this is very unfortunate. I completely sympathize with the difficulties of maintaining such a high profile project, especially one like an emulator which usually has a large influx of low-knowledge users spamming stuff. However, I think this is (once again) completely the wrong move by Stenzek. In effect, this is only making things harder for legitimate users (99% of the user base), and won't change anything for those not complying.

I use NixOS, where we repackage all applications by default, so we will no longer be able to use any DuckStation version from this point on without violating the license.

Personally, I so not use any non-FOSS emulators myself (my own choice, not the developer's concern), so I guess I'm not using it anymore anyway. Back to Beetle PSX it is. (Great emulator btw, it's tied to RA which some people don't like)

EA expanding EA Anti-Cheat - bad news for Steam Deck / Linux

Closed-source kernel-level anti-cheat is pure insanity, even on Windows.

The Steam Deck really doesn't need exclusives

Not only does it not need exclusives, I don't *want* it to have exclusives.

Nintendo goes after SteamGridDB, likely for people doing emulation on Steam Deck

Most of the artwork available on SteamGridDB (I'd wager) is not at all related to Nintendo. Most of it is for PC games. I don't think a single dev or publisher has ever issued a DMCA takedown for someone having posted a bit of fan artwork to put in your Steam library. I use this site all the time, but I use it only for my older games in my Steam library that don't have artwork in the new "vertical" style, or when devs replace the old artwork with new ones to advertise a new update or patch (I really hate that).

Honestly, this is just shitposting in legal form by Nintendo (although the legality of abusing the DMCA this way is murky at best).
