DrNick and Jarmer: They've posted updates [External Link] about what they're working on fairly frequently. I think for anyone who's followed the project it's been very clear that it isn't dead.

Jokes aside, if a thing is free, it doesn't mean we can't talk about its flaws.
Ofcourse, that's obvious.

Quoting: Liam DaweI think the problem is more what you're doing is a rather tiring argument, that people often repeat against others in the FOSS space when this type of thing comes up again and again.

Yes, people are free to spend their time developing what they want - but the whole point of this discussion and the years of discussion on the feature in question is people wanted it.

Trying to argue it away and silence people because of how they spend their free time is just unhelpful. Because with that line of thinking: we might as well never want or discuss anything about FOSS, because the answer will always be the same: you don't have to use it / it's their free time they do what they want etc. Let people discuss and want things.
I understand *fully* that people have wanted this and I don't think anyone mind when people express their wishes. Honestly people being excited about software you're making and having ideas for improvement is, when put forward in a nice way, just gravy! Just be humble about it and be aware that you're not customers and therefore don't get to send *demands*.

But *please* discuss the software and send ideas for improvements. That is generally appreciated.

(Also there's no need to imply that I'm trying to "silence" anyone).

Quoting: LoftyNobody is 'forcing' anybody to do anything with their time. Im not sure if this escaped you but this is a discussion forum, where people in particular tend to voice their opinions.

Whether you like them or not.
That's a text book straw man argument. The thing that you're arguing against neither represent my views nor what I have said. Please be better.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyOf course it was that they prioritized their time and chose to work on other things. That's kind of by definition; they decided not to do it basically == they decided to do other things instead. Doesn't make them right.
You don't get to have a say in how other people spend their time. Just like I don't have a say in what you're doing with your time.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyGiven the fairly basic nature of this feature, the fact that many desired it, and that most other desktop environments both on Linux and other OSes had it, ignoring it was a stupid decision. Their priorities were misplaced.

Making Free Software projects above criticism does them no favours.
If I thought I had a say in how you spend your time I could've pointed out that *you* didn't prioritize adding an icon grid to the file chooser either. And since Free Software projects is just people I must conclude that no one is above criticism. Based on that I could have criticized *you* for not prioritizing the icon grid. Would that make sense to you?

Quoting: Purple Library Guy... so seems to me any excuses Gnome might make were probably . . . excuses.
It could just have been that they prioritized their time and choose to work on other things? Why would they have to make excuses for that?

The way you're framing this is so entitled. Free software is a privilege not a right.

Quoting: mattiasb"As dumb as it sounds..."

This comment made me pretty disappointed.
Care to expand on why instead of making a drive-by comment like that?

I'll expand why it's dumb: it's such an incredibly basic feature for both usability and accessibility, that they said it themselves - was requested for years. It's dumb because it took so long.
It made me disappointed because I've gotten a better impression of you from your writing. Like, you're getting GNOME for free. I don't know how to explain myself better than that.

The reason for this feature taking so long was mostly technical to the best of my knowledge but I'd bet that a lack of developer time played a part as well btw.
