Clearing up what games will and won't run on the Steam Deck

Quoting: BielFPsI am really skeptical about this situation improving so much with steam deck release

Same here, but Valve must have some substancial breakthrough that they didn't share, if they made such a bold claim. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense...

#fingerscrossed

Quoting: sanLet's stick to the facts as Valve presented them.
Quoting: Liam DaweWell, the facts are we know exactly what Proton doesn't work with already, as said in the article, which Valve themselves state in the FAQ which is also linked.
But, what is clear, in the Steamwork video, is that Valve is working with a more advanced version of Proton that is not published yet. So, the picture we have, at this moment, is outdated to judge if all games will run on SteamOS. I think, as of today, that we have no reliable clue on the subject. Does it means that it's wrong to assume that it won't run all games? We should have a better idea by december.

Edit: Same idea, but reformulated the last phrase.

Quoting: PublicNuisanceValve over promised here or used terrible wording. This is going to explode in their faces. As I have said before, all it will take for them to be wrong is for one single game out of 10000+ to not work and then they become liars and have to talk about how they were misunderstood and then they look like con men.

It should have been clearer, from the start, that it requires a Windows installation to run all games. What I want to know, when I buy a new product, is what to expect from an ootb experience. So, it seems that we haven't heard about that yet, which is pretty weird to me.

So, the major breakthrough will be EAC and BattlEye support, if it ever comes out ahead of launch...

Valve's curated list better be up to date and populated with all the compatible games available because this is what's going to make it or break it. Protondb is not the way forward for Windows users that are just waiting on a misstep to strip SteamOS out of the device.

Valve catches a break in the Steam Controller patent trial versus Ironburg

Quoting: bepopIt's not.
What makes you think so? Imo, the Steam Deck is no proof that the patent is not blocking a Steam Controller V2. The Steam Deck is a portable console, not a controller (the patent specifies "standard controller with back buttons").

Quoting: bepopI wish for Steam Controller v2 as well.
Exactly my stance. Imo, the best controller I ever used and I still have a computer that I game on.

I just wish that this lawsuit is what's holding back Valve from releasing a Steam Controller V2.

NVIDIA DLSS for Proton + Linux with DirectX 11 / 12 lands in September

Quoting: ArtenSo... nvidia hopes, that somebody choose their GPU for deck like handheld with steamOS? Ot they planing to make one?

Good upscaling is crucial for handhald device, if you want just conect it to display and play on larger screen...

May be related to this, in some way?

It maybe related. But this is about integrating it into Proton for windows games mostly on X86-64 architecture. Games are demanding not only for GPU, but also for CPU. So nvidia need CPU like M1 from Apple which has X86-64 like memory-ordering model in silicon as alternative for ARM memory ordering mode. It speeds up Rosseta 2 translation, because Rosseta 2 has one big problem out of the way. Apple don't give them M1, so nvidia need make something similar in-house.

I also tought about the x86 and ARM "issue", but I was wondering how they could build an ARM gaming catalogue, for this device, without a conversion layer... Linux is already a hard sell on x86... ARM and Arch in this case... Yikes!

Quoting: constAnyway, they were among the first to jump the Humble Linux train that got everything started and I'll never forget that. Linux gaming today only exists because of some critical events and the HIBs were a key part of this.

Trine 2 was the first game I bought for Linux.

Yep... Sitting on my couch, my Inspiron N5110 on my lap. Still remember that moment. Good'ol times, when everything felt new!

It didn't start up at first, all just black, and I wasn't even disappointed, I felt like it had to be like this, 'cause, you know... it's Linux, it cannot be for gaming!

My Inspiron had a Radeon HD6470m with 512mb VRAM... Considering the driver support for AMD products, back then... The input lag made the game barely playable... But I kept on gaming, because "It's on Linux and Steam is in beta".
