Firefox will get AI controls to turn it all off

I wish this stuff was just made available through extensions so people who don't want them don't have to deal with them, and people who do want them can still use them (even if I personally wish that Mozilla weren't investing into AI at all). But at least they're making good on this. As much as I'm critical of Mozilla's direction, Firefox remains the best browser for my own personal needs and use case.

KDE's 2025 fundraising has been a huge success

I'm more of a GNOME fan but KDE has been killing it lately, and deserves all the success they've gotten! I'm glad we have multiple high quality and future proof desktops with strong ecosystems around them.

The RAM price and availability situation is going to worsen as Micron pull their Crucial consumer business

The AI Bubble and hype train is so absolutely stupid and is destroying just about everything that matters in life. Can't wait for it to fucking burst so we can go back to some semblance of normalcy.

Arch-based distro EndeavourOS gets a new Ganymede release

Quoting: scaineI'd LOVE to see an Arch-based distro that give us a store-like experience for updates and software installs. It's frustrating that Arch is so obtuse that even tools like Discover (KDE's appstore) is "not recommended for use with Arch-based distros".

I'm on CachyOS now and it ships with Octopi, but that has multiple problems - the interface is probably worse than Synaptic, a thing I didn't believe possible. It doesn't handle the AUR, and it doesn't know about Flatpak. CachyOS does provide a one-stop "upgrade" tool (open a terminal and type "upgrade", ha!), but no GUI exists.

It's a problem, and one that's hand-waved away by dedicated Arch users who say "just use the terminal". I'm fine doing so, but it means that I wouldn't recommend an Arch distro to anyone, ever. You try Arch, tentatively, after years of Linux exposure, and you might still bounce of it because of this.

So, yeah, so frustrating. Powerful software, like Arch, shouldn't be (this) difficult to use.
This is the reason why, while not perfect by any means, I just stick with Fedora over Arch based distros. Everything generally works without much fucking around and it feels like a more polished and integrated experience.

KDE Plasma going all-in on Wayland and will drop the X11 session completely

I think this is good news and definitely the right call by the developers. It still leaves over a year for the last remaining issues (or whatever justifies keeping X11 around) to be ironed out, and means that developer time can be freed up to making a better desktop overall, and even beyond that LTS distributions will no doubt still offer it for a few more years.

The cross-platform Nexus Mods app v0.21.1 makes mod collection installation smoother

I really hope we get Bethesda game support soon. I've been wanting to start a modded play through of Fallout 4 for a bit now but couldn't quite get MO2 to work properly through Wine/Proton, and everything else seemed too hard to work with.

Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive split with Cities: Skylines going to a new developer

Not really all that surprising something like this would happen after the mess that is Cities Skylines 2. Hopefully the new team can bring it into a better state and Colossal Order does better with their next project.

Valve reveal the new Steam Frame, Steam Controller and Steam Machine with SteamOS

Without knowing the cost, it's hard to be too excited or disappointed either way. I think it looks generally decent, and as long as Valve price it reasonably then it could be a good deal.

I do worry about the 8GB of VRAM though, I think if this is targeting the budget sector then it'll more forgiveable. But it would have been nice to see them ship it with at least 12GB of VRAM. I do think given we're seeing issues already with 8GB of VRAM it would have been better to futureproof it, and I do think this, for me, reinforces that this should have a budget price.

Also, I'm somewhat suprised they aren't using an APU here, but I guess either RDNA3 didn't scale well enough, or Strix Halo was too expensive.
