For the longest time now, I have been hoping for a 'forever' AAA shooter to sink into, that actually worked under Linux.I've found myself completely moving away from Windows over the past 3 years, and since Bungie's Destiny 2 (sadly) completely shit the bed - this is Embark hearing and answering my prayers. Between Arc Raiders and The Finals, I think I can pretty much scratch the shooter itch while sticking with what is now my daily driver OS.
I'm sure I'm missing more here (there is so much awesome innovation in 1 package), but you get my drift.
This is the kind of shakeup the looter/shooter/extraction/PvPvE genre desperately needed and I'm going to be playing the heck out of it
- AAA(A?) Title: Check! (set price aside for a second, you could argue it is actually AAAA in terms of optimization while not charging an arm and a leg)
- Online multi-player: Check!
- Respect player time investment: Check! (I really hope this one continues to be the case over the next decade :woot:)
- Shooter: Check!
- PvPvE: Check!
- Sane Matchmaking with Separate solo and team queues: Check!
- Extraction mechanics: Check!
- Actually works under freaking Linux: Check!!
- 10-years of updates planned? Check!

Certainly helps if more and more popular games (like Arc Raiders) embrace and allow playing with anti-chat on Linux.

I bought this game because of Embark's Linux support for The Finals and that game still works great and also, I want to support and encourage more AA and AA devs/publishers to do the same. I seem to remember Embark saying that they do hear us Linux gamers and will do their level best (I don't know if they actually used the word 'commit') to keeping the game running on Linux. It will be a shame if they're forced to cut Linux out, but I'm hoping that if their purely competitive shooter works on Linux after all these years, they can find a way to keep it running on Linux for a PvPvE game. fingers crossed
Battlefield 6 releases today and it will not be playable on any Linux / SteamOS system

And that is why I vote with my wallet and steer clear away from games like this, no matter how "good" they are.

I am low key hopeful this commitment from Embark bleeds into Arc Raiders...

The only reason I remember the original AotS is because I think this was the game that put AMD GPUs back on the map because their optimized DX12 async compute implementation advantage over Nvidia GPUs at the time. Of course, the game itself turned into a bit of a meme with being renamed to 'Ashes of the Benchmark' as a result.

I am hoping that they continue this same stance with Arc Raiders. Why? Because that game has the potential to become the standard bearer for what is possible for multiplayer AAA games on Linux to become. The Finals enjoys a degree of popularity, but it's not a breakout success when compared to some of the other holdouts. Arc Raiders on the other hand, has a chance to become just that.

Are these new X3Ds still asymmetrical? I.e. extra cache only on half of the cores? I'd prefer a fully symmetrical one once they get to it.Yes, they are still asymmetrical. Adding 3D V-cache is expensive from a manufacturing standpoint and besides, it's not like Intel is offering any real competition, so there's no real impetus to deliver full-chip V-cache. I'm hoping Zen6 does, though, as a parting gift before they EOL AM5. It'd be a bit of a shame if they didn't.
