Outlast, That Really Scary Game Looks Like It's Still Heading To Linux

Quoting: PublicNuisanceI loved the atmosphere and story in Outlast. I didn't like how stealth was forced through lack of combat though. If my character can see a pipe on the ground but can't pick it up to defend himself that;s a flaw in my opinion. Regardless I do plan to finish it, I'll just wait for the Linux version to do so.
I can see the point of skipping combat, though I did itch for a pipe a few times. Shouldering past enemies usually seemed a safer bet than actually hiding from them, maybe a bonk with a pipe would have been good. Outlast reminded me a lot of Condemned sometimes in decor and tone - would have loved to pull a plank or pipe or locker door off the environment and bash people with it like in that glorious series. :D

Really enjoyed this back in the 90s, replayed it a couple of times (under WINE!), still have fond memories. TBH I'm always reluctant to buy the same game twice, but the (minor) enhancements might make it worth it.

Respect to Double Fine to their continued Linux support.

They've really come a long way with that wrapper - the new release is a surprise, thought they'd given up. I might have to start this game again. I was really enjoying it, but the threat of randomly crashing just killed it for me. For now I'm kinda burned out on RPGs after playing DA:Inquisition.

Quoting: DrMcCoyMe, I'm quite partial to David Lynch's output, like Blue Velvet [External Link], Mulholland Drive [External Link] and Twin Peaks [External Link].
Excellent choice! Dunno why these don't register as thrillers so me - more sort of surreal mystery-horror in my mind! Blue Velvet particularly is just superb.

Quoting: jamesc359For me the scariest moment I can recall during a game happened while I was playing Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem on the GameCube. Despite the title this is far from the scariest game out there, so after playing for quite a while I had been lulled into the sense that nothing truly frightening would happen. As many reviews had pointed out the game was very gory and at times a little weird, but not scary.

As I was exploring the bathroom in mansion's master bedroom it happened; a fast and brutal cut scene of my character's corpse lying in a bathtub full of blood. It was accompanied by a woman's scream.

The scene paled in comparison to the many horror scenes I've seen in games before, yet it scared me like no other game ever did. I can only attribute the intensity of this scare to the false sense of security the game had carefully crafted leading up to it.
The first time this game pretended to delete all my savegames scared me awfully. All the blood drained from my face.
Such a great and evil game. ;)
(I still play it about once a year with my hubby!)

Darn - already bought and played it on Windows just a week ago. :(
It was enjoyable, lots of jump-scares, occasionally great dialogue/monologue (though lousy note writing), otherwise not a great deal of atmosphere or story - but I don't feel like it has replay value. :)

My favourite thriller is still The Taking Of Pelham 123! I dunno, so many to choose from...
Oldschoolwise, Silent Hill 1 had the overall creepiest and most intriguing atmosphere for me (at the time...), though Resi 3 was probably one of the tensest - the constant threat of the Nemesis from start to finish was pretty unique. Eternal Darkness is still a real blast, occasionally scary but mostly just really evil and amusing in its 'sanity' effects.

Feral Interactive Wish To Know Why You Game On Linux

I game on Linux because I use Linux as my main OS and rebooting is annoying. Also Windows gaming is becoming increasingly annoying - Linux works better than Windows for my gamepad, Windows interrupts games for annoying update notices by default, etc.
