Quoting: Mr_gamer" UTC Valve has put out a small update to Proton Experimental, which should fix many games due to a regression that was hiding away. With this release they've updated the included version of DXVK, which is what does the Direct 3D 9/10/ 11 to Vulkan translation for Windows games on Steam Deck and desktop Linux.". . . They already were? Like, this is a small update to Proton, which is totally for playing Windows games, and it has always used DXVK, which is totally for letting you run things that use DirectX 11 (and 9 and 10). This update will make it do that stuff marginally better, but it's been pretty good at that for quite a while now.
Does this mean games needing Direct11 like Microsoft games are now playable using the new update?

Quoting: CatKillerAnd yet the point stands--in a random sampling of machines, a machine used full time has twice the chance of being polled as a machine used half of the time.Quoting: mylkajust because someone has a steam deck, does not mean, that they are not playing on WINDOWS PC anymoreIt's a hardware survey, not a user survey. The Deck counts as a Deck, a Windows PC counts as a Windows PC and a Linux PC counts as a Linux PC.
so a lot of deck owners count as windows PC

I personally think it is better to have wisdom than lack it, better to have knowledge than lack it, better to have stories than lack them. Being better off is not just about how many calories you consume. Many works of great philosophers, many accounts of history and mythology, were lost. Just having the missing Aristotle stuff would probably make a surprising difference to our thinking, considering how foundational the stuff we do have is. And as I recall, we know there is missing Aristotle stuff because other people's commentaries have referred to it. It's not just in physics where new thinkers stand on the shoulders of giants; philosophical and political thought also builds on the ideas of the past, and if we'd had more of them to build on, our whole intellectual tradition would be richer.

Quoting: Mountain ManGetting into deep philosophy here. In what way or for what reasons can you say any person, let alone the species, is "better off"? Any basis you propose can be readily disputed.Quoting: Purple Library GuyYou say that we're worse off as a species because the Library of Alexandria was destroyed. I'm curious in what way you think we're worse off, and what your basis is for claiming so.Quoting: Mountain ManBut here is something to think about: countless works of art have been lost throughout human history, and will continue to be lost. Are we worse off as a species because of it?Yes, we bloody well are. You know that old question, what would you do if you had a time machine and could use it just once? You have no idea how many people answer that question, "Would go and rescue the books from the Library of Alexandria"; although my mother leans towards "Would go stop the fire that burned down the building that held all the Anglo Saxon literature that was ever written down".

Quoting: GreydMiyusectors/planetary automation has been broken for 3 versions now.It was always broken. Just, there was a time when they didn't admit it. I was always like "OK, new sector, say goodbye to decent management of those planets". I'm happier just micromanaging them.

If I'm thinking of the same thing, I heard good things about Stars! but never got my hands on it.

Quoting: denyasisI spend most of my Stellaris time paused. Like, I let it run until something happens, then I pause it while I handle whatever. Or I'll pause it when nothing is even happening, like if I decide it's time to go through the planets and see what development they need, it's paused while I look through the list. I've never tried to fiddle with stuff while it's running, too paranoid I'll miss something. So for practical purposes, for me, it's like turn-based only with variable-length turns.Civilization and Stellaris were originally the main inspirations for the game, but New Stars is it's own gameInteresting... Didn't expect that based on the name. Kinda figured it was inspired by, well, Stars!.
I bounced off of Stellaris pretty hard, I think part of it was the real time aspect, which I've never really been good at, lol (I get too distracted by... Everything)

Might be interesting. There are times when I don't quite have the energy to fire up Stellaris; I usually end up going back to MOO2, but this would be something to try. Thinking of which, this game represents an interesting passing of the torch. For all these years, every time you had a space 4X, it was basically inspired by Master of Orion 2. Well, except for two games I'm aware of that basically went back to reproduce Master of Orion 1!
I think it says something about Stellaris that it has enough impact that now a new space 4X is inspired by Stellaris instead of MOO.

Valheim devs clarify stance on modding including a clear no to paid mods

Quoting: LauraIt's a bit weird they talk about how selling mods isnt right while they're selling their game €20 a copy while it's in early access and honestly barely invest anything back to it considering how many times it was sold and how buggy/slow it is.That seems a bit much. 20 is not that expensive for a game. If people didn't think it was worth it, they could . . . not buy it. But lots and lots of people have, even though the Valheim folks have no marketing muscle to persuade them with. And they are perhaps not amazing optimizers but they do seem to have continued working on the game, adding quite a bit of free content, options and whatnot.
